Taipan New Taipan Vet 2, .22, long

Picked up a Vet 2 long in .22 from Tony at Talon Airguns. I asked for it to be tuned for MRDs and that’s how it arrived.

Since Tony is in FL and I am in the Midwest I expected the numbers to be a bit different so I ran it over a crono after I cleaned the barrel.
JSB 25.4gr
Shot count: 30
Low: 909 FPS
Hi: 919 FPS
Avg: 915 FPS
Spread: 10 FPS
STD Dev: 3.2 FPS

The first thing I noticed is the barrel is rather floppy. The scope mounts on top of the barrel too, which is odd but hey I don’t design these things. The new side cocking lever is absolutely sublime (I bored that quote from @tommyb ). I really didn’t know how to take his description but now I get it. The pull backwards is so easy and silky smooth. It’s better than any other rifle I have owned.

The trigger is good but not as good as my Vet 1. First stage is a bit heavier but not bad. It comes to a positive wall then it has quite a bit of creep before it breaks. I am sure I can adjust that out but I am just reporting how it was delivered.

I tried a variety of pellets, all 25 grain MRD variants: AEA, JTS, FX (large and small base), JSB and Range Masters. The gun likes the JSB variants better than the AEA and JTS pellets.

I tried the included barrel band but it actually made the accuracy worse. I moved it from the end of the tube, towards the stock in 1/2” increments but all it soaps was made the groups larger instead of smaller. The best accuracy was without the barrel band.

The shot cycle is rather odd. As I break the shot and watch the impact on the target I see a lot of vibration in the scope. This is no doubt from the way the scope is mounted on the barrel. It’s not a bad thing but just really different from what I am used to. It reminds me of watching a slow motion video.

Well I guess it’s time to talk about the accuracy. I sighted it in at 25Y then moved the target out to 50Y, because this is where this gun plans to play. I have no interest in slugs so this will only be a pellets only gun. This is the first day that I have shot it but all in all, I am really happy with this gun.

What are the winds like? That is a drastic difference in grouping between his and yours.

I'm surprised you find the barrel floppy. However I'm sure the extra 150mm over the 550mm I had makes quite the difference. I never noticed any vibration in mine but makes sense with how the whole barrel and scope mount is setup and with a longer barrel pushing higher power would show it more. It's such an odd design but for a free floating barrel system you really can't get a POI shift as it's directly attached to the barrel. Quite clever even though very different and odd it makes sense in a way.

I'm not sure how tight your moderator is but they are supposed to be quite snug to tension the barrel. Something to check if that Is an issue however based on accuracy I don't see it being an issue.

Triggers are the same as the originals so just needs some adjustments I'm sure. The cocking as mentioned is the best cocking on a gun that ive had in my hands which has been alot.

The real problem I see is you picking which pellet to move forward with lol seems to shoot them all extremely well. Have you tried any if the 22.07gr JTS or 21.9gr AEA? Supposed to be better BC than the MRDs.

re. Pellet testing - Agree with Dillon on giving the 22.07 and AEA 21.9 a good trial at 50y. I tried the 22.07 at both 30y Challenge paper targets and also group testing at 50y. Very good accuracy. I still need to order some tins of the 21..9g.

Re. Barrel tensioning via tightening the moderator with supplied moderator pins. Q. Anyone really know how tight this is supposed to be? I have not encountered this before, so I just tightened moderator hand tight but not sure how to use the pins?

Oops, I was wrong. It was 15 gusting to 24. I was shooting from 5:30-7 PM.

I understand there was a distance difference but I had to ask because even with the extra 20yds, going from the difference is big, but these winds certainly explain it. You shot very well for having those winds at 50yd with pellets!

I too had trouble pulling a Patchworm through my moderator so I removed it and cleaning was very easy. However, when I cleaned my barrel, several more times, the POI shifted SIGNIFICANTLY every time I reinstalled the moderator. I tightened the mod the same way each time using one of the holes in the mod as a registration location mark. I have not yet experimented with different tightness's.

Tim, the most important thing when loosening the breech shrouds 4 grub screws you NEED to start with the farthest to the RIGHT first then the next, so on so forth, then when tightening them back down you NEED to start with the LEFT farthest screw first then the next , maybe the cause of the POI shifts FYI 👍. I also clean my barrel with a Patchworm kit and I use a thin straw to bypass the baffels, you'll need to hold the straw so it doesn't move if hit by the straw. I then use my left finger to guide the pull thru before inserting into the barrels breech.
