Taipan New Taipan Vet 2, .22, long

I emailed Taipan and asked if there was a procedure for torquing the moderator and barrel tension on Vet 2’s. Here is their reply:

Hello,
there is no procedure for deploying a moderator. It is common knowledge that when you remove a moderator, your grouping changes every time and you have to re-shoot the model. This is a common occurrence.
Kind regards,
technical support

I emailed Taipan about the plenum size on my Vet 2's 550mm size and they got back quickly but didn't specify size...LOL! Doesn't really matter but was curious.

That’s a very poor answer Tim.

If I reread your question, and look at the answer…. Users want to understand if there is a process for using pins that Taipan supplies for tightening the moderator. There must be some guidance as to how this tensions the shroud over the barrel, and how tight or how loose it should be. The YT video hints that you have to make sure the moderator is very tight to avoid accuracy issues.

Maybe I’m just thick, but no one from Taipan has clearly explained this process.

Have you asked Tony about it at Talon? He may have an answer for us?

I asked Taipan regarding barrel twist rate. The 550mm barrel is 1:17.7, which is odd because they stated on their website that the barrel have a special twist rate designed for slugs. But the twist rate seems pretty common, at least on my guns with CZ barrel. Whichever is the case, I don't shoot slugs and my Taipan 2 tac is very accurate with pellets.

Ok, just got this from Tony….

“Just a simple hand tight without using the pins. If you over tighten start to put undue stress on the barrel which would result in inconsistencies and point of impact shift.”

Note to self: Don’t over tighten. I suppose this means hand tight is good.

Just a thought...maybe each gun is different so it's up to the end user to figure it out? Or tight

Thanks for CLEARING that up with Tony! 🙏 Thanks for doing the legwork!

@igolfat8 This is a pretty decent write up. Thanks. When you say that the barrel is floppy, are you only referring to the barrel without the barrel band? Other than seeing your scope vibrate on the shot, what else is the barrel doing that makes it floppy to you? Do you get POI shifts if you lean the rifle up against a tree, tire, wall, etc?

FWIW - Before I received this guidance from Tony, two days prior I had cleaned my barrel with the moderator off. After cleaning I screwed moderator back on and tried the two pins in the moderator holes. As I grabbed each pin, and tried to lightly tighten, it did not move. Hmmm - maybe stop and leave it alone I thought. It was then that I decided to leave it be and just go with hand tight.

As it turns out, Tony subsequently clarified our question and I’m glad I listened to the ‘good angel’ whispering in my ear.

I only get a POI shift when removing and replacing the moderator.

When comparing the vet 700 barrel to my RAW LRT barrels the Vet just seems to flex a greater amount when I push on it. The vet shoots really well and doesn’t shift POI as long as I do my part.

@igolfat8 Understood. Thanks for elaborating.
