Excited about my new-to-me .30 FX WC Mk2...I purchased her recently as part of a package deal on AGN Classifieds.
There has been no "shooting weather" in CT lately, temps below freezing and windy - typical January weather here.
Her History:
Some of these AGN rifles have some great history, this ole Cat appeared to be in decent shape. It was the only airgun of the owner I bought from, he didn't seem to know much about her. He had owned her for about a year - bought to shoot with his grandkids. He seemed more of a powder burner guy. She had developed a slow leak and had no air when I received her.
I tracked down the previous owner - another AGN member - Ron (AirNGasman) and he was kind enough to not only answer my PM, but gave me a call and we talked for about an hour. Ron even took out a pest with his .457 during the call, lol. He kept extensive records on his rifles back to the 1980s. Ron tells me that my new Wildcat is not only an excellent 100 yard shooter, he even digs up his 100 targets with the rifle and shares them with me! Ron informs that this Wildcat does not shift PoI and also shoots groups that average 1.25" at 100 yards. He said that he loved that it was a consistent 1.25" - varied from perhaps .85 to 1.4 - rather than some rifles he's had that can shoot a .75" group followed by a 1.75" group. Great guy - loved getting to meet him.
Her Mods:
So now I really wanted to try her out... but my compressor died and I don't have my tank filled yet (tank was my primary item in the package deal, lol)..
... so I hand pumped her up to 210bar. It wasn't too bad at all. I had cleaned the barrel, polished up the brass lead - but thats it. I took three shots un-scoped with a chrono and saw that she was shooting 875fps with FX 44g - damn, that's about perfect. But 20F and too cold to shoot. The air leak was about 5bar per day, so I have not addressed it yet.
As I studied up on Wildcat Mk2s, I noticed that she has a few upgrades, she has an added plenum that extends her air tube. Due to the longer air tube, she also has a shroud extension. She also had a BlackArts barrel band (I removed) and a magazine holder (I removed). She has a Huma Reg gauge where the air bleed screw is on a factory Mk2 ( I assume that she likely has a Huma reg now installed). The reg gauge has been rock solid at just below 150bar. She has a missing cocking lever screw and the hammer spring adjust nut looked pretty beat up. I'm ordering the replacements from Cape Fear - Newman informed that she indeed has an added plenum, he could not tell the version of the plenum from my pic - but said she should easily shoot the 44g at 920-930 with the plenum (so I could also try 50g). The stock also had an access hole in the rear to allow an allen to adjust the hammer spring without removing the stock - not sure if they came that way from the factory.
The Wildcat Mk2 seems a simple rifle - which I love. One thing that I didn't realize until I got the rifle is that the WC Mk2 uses non-spring loaded mags - like a Taipan or Weihrauch - awesome! Single reg, simple hs preload adjust without need for dual external wheel and internal screw adjustments - awesome.
Her 1st Time Out:
Too windy (12-24mph) today and 32F, but it was sunny and I had to get her out. Slapped on a 45X Sightron and she zeroed pretty close with 2 shots at 45 yards. Shot three 5-shot groups to check consistency... damn, 1/2" edge-to-edge groups at 45 (see photo - red rings are 1/2" diameter), in the wind and I'm not used to the trigger yet. Can't wait to get her over to my brother's house and shoot her at 100.
Summary:
Sometimes the best guns aren't the latest guns... and from my experience, the best guns come from the AGN Classifieds, lol. My "Warcat" has seen some battles, note that she appears to have shot down 25 Me109s over the Channel at one point in her lifespan... but she's a shooter !
