New to PCP Air Rifles

After checking out all of the reviews, I pre-ordered an Air Venturi Avenger with the wood stock in .22. It is due to ship by 5/27/21. I plan to use it primarily for pest control and squirrel hunting. I love to tinker with rifles, having built a few custom sporter CF riles from M98 actions. I am looking forward to tuning my Air Venturi Avenger for maximum efficiency and accuracy, therefore, I am also looking forward to learning from the members of this forum.

If I can get the right deal on a like new item, I will mount a Weaver Classic 3-9x32 RF scope with AO. I have also ordered 500 of the FX Hybrid slugs since they seem to shoot quite accurately from these rifles. I'm hoping to establish a tune for these as well as for the Crosman Premier pellets that are readily available locally. The Crosman Premier pellets shoot quite accurately at 770fps from my son's RWS M48 Diana rifle in .22. I'm thinking the Crosman pellets will do well at 850-875fps from the Air Venturi Avenger. Hoping for about an additional 100fps for flat trajectory with the FX Hybrid slugs.

Right now, getting a 60min SCBA tank set up and filled locally is the biggest hurdle. I'm not looking to invest in a compressor at this time. I found some 60min tanks with an 11/2010 manufacture date for a reasonable price. A local dive shop will send them out for hydro testing and will fill it for $10. The major hurdle is getting an adaptor that will go from the SCBA fitting to DIN. The dive shop does not have one and it will cost me almost $100 to purchase one. The dive shop is also 35 miles from my home. I'm looking to see if the local Fire department will fill; it, but with COVID restrictions they are not open to the public at this time.

Anyway, if anyone has any advise,. I would appreciate hearing it.

Welcome aboard! This is a great forum and you’ll find all kinds of help and advice here. Sounds like you are in for a lot of fun! I ended up liking airguns so much that I upgraded quickly and also bought a compressor. The compressor just died though and now I’m feeling the pain of running out of air lol! I’m thinking about inquiring about filling with nitrogen. I’m going to call around today to see if it’s possible here. I did the dive bottles and dive shop for quite a while and finally realized I had to have a compressor. Maybe check out if you can get nitrogen there. I don’t know anything about it, hopefully somebody will chime in! Again, welcome home lol!

In case there's anyone that hasn't seen the new wood stocked version of the AVA here it is.

I'm not too crazy about the color, but for an additional $80 over the "tupperware" version, I can't justify the work and expense of making a new stock. It will be easy enough to strip the finish, stain it a darker hue and finish with Minwax Antique Oil Finish mixed 1:1 with boiled linseed oil.

I might eventually get a compressor. It all depends on how much hassle it is to get tanks filled and how often I need to do it..

As far as nitrogen, the only advantage I see is that nitrogen will have all moisture removed. That is one concern with using my own compressor. Once all of the attachments are added to get dry air, the expense will add up. As it is, I will need a tank anyway so that is a good place to start. Once the 15 year life of the tank runs out, I might be able to justify the added expense.

all you really need is a long line going vertical a couple of feet at the compressor and the lottle filter deal it comes with .. those big chinese filters are bs trust me, they dont filter a dam thing all they 'do' do is give a long enough run for the air to cool and condense in the line and it can be back bled out periodically as its filling .. and if you use a tank alittle moisture in that can be bled out and generally wont be a problem with the gun .. so just making a case for a cheap compressor .. you dont need an elaborate setup, just maybe a fill whip a few feet long ..

Get your gun. Shoot it. Go from there.

Everyone is different - I've spent a small fortune on guns that everyone said were great that didn't float my boat. I've also managed to find some that do. I really think the best thing that anyone can do is just dive in, with whatever their budget and desire can reckon, and go from there. Realize that any individual advise comes from individual experience - there is no 'right' way to start this hobby.

Congrats. I love my 25.

Check this guy out. He is a member here and seems to quite enjoy the Avenger.

Air Ventury Tuning Thread

Good stuff, and lots of info. FWIW, my Power Pistons love Crossman Premier Hunters and Piranha. They may not expand well, or at all, but make a nice meplat and work very well.

That was one of the reviews that sold me on this PCP as a starter. I think for me it will be all the air rifle I will ever need. If the AVA wont' get the job done, I have other options available.

My CZ 452 American with CCI Velocitors is pretty potent but a bit noisy.

Then there is my 5mm Remington Magnum centerfire conversion. .204 Hornady V Max at 2450 Mv. Top group is 100yds, the bottom group at 200yds.

33gr V Max left, 30gr Berger on the right.

Velocitors are one of my favorites for much of anything larger than a raccoon. They make good coyote medicine.

The 25 is a fun rifle to play with, and even though the Benjamin has worked flawlessly for yard work and everything else I've asked it to do, the 25 was something I didn't have. I waded off into a 45 cal Texan at the same time. That one is a beast. I never thought an air rifle would have recoil. LOL

Center fire is my first love, but things have happened in the political environment that make the ammo and the components all but unobtainable in my area. What I have is dedicated to getting groceries now. Air gives me a lot of trigger time.

Have fun

The biggest reason I want to get into one of the more capable air rifles is that I have moved into a semi-urban environment on the outskirts of a small village here near the Canadian border in NY State. Due to the breakup of a 35 year marriage I will have to sell my 74 acre hobby farm. There, I could shoot my CF rifles off my kitchen deck. I plan to shoot the PCP off my significant other's back porch.
