New to PCP, How often do FX guys tinker vs shoot?

Have multiple FX rifles and tinker with them all and shoot them all, all the time. Tinkering is part of the fun and with different projectiles it is inevitable one will tinker to achieve the best results.
It is easy to go back or get close to your original starting point. Just make sure you write down where you start so you know how to get back to those numbers. FX has some phenomenal rifles but if there is one downside it will be the availability of some of their products especially anything with the statement “Coming Soon”.
Out the box/case, the rifles shoot great and are typically setup for you to load, shoot and enjoy.

I bought a Maverick VP tuned by SPAW to me specifications. Kept it that way for months. Shoots lights out and holds its POI.
Recently I watched a Ted's Holdover video and decided to mess with it a bit. It came from SPAW with first reg at 145, second at 113, hammer at 7 and was shooting around 875 fps and get about 100 shots per fill.
I upped the second reg to 118, I have a digital gauge and got to a very consistent 890 at 90 shots per fill.
A couple days ago I decided to get some shot strings at lower hammer settings, 870 at 5, 888 at 6, 891 at 7. So I put the hammer at 6 and kept it there. The benefit of 6 over 7 was not only adding another 10 shots or so per fill, which isn't a big deal to me, but lowered the dB from 81 to 75 which was very noticeable. Does any of it really matter? Not in the big picture, but it was fun and obviously made the rifle more efficient.

I have several guns, some of them FX. Usually a couple of my guns are in a tuning prosess. One is in a trial and error prosess, setup for .177 slugs. My other one is the taipan veteran, which I added a harmonic tuner on, which I hope will improve a litle with pellets. My newest gun, an FX maverick, I tuned for 16 grain jsb pellets, and is at the moment "finished", except I my try turning the barrel tuner a few cliks on a calm day. But reg, and speed is at the moment set.

I have an FX Maverick VP in .30cal. When I received it, it shot JSB Exact 44.75gr at 850fps, and it was pellet on pellet for as long as the gun had air! I tweaked the gun to shoot the Exacts, Hades and FX Hybrids at 930fps and it has performed without flaw ever since. I almost exclusively shoot FX Hybrid Slugs in my airgun, and I am simply amazed with its repeatable consistency at 100 yards on game.

There is an inherent problem with anything adjustable, people believe they are obligated to adjust it! There is obviously a market for the gadgetry created by FX, and that's great for a certain buyer. I'd rather just shoot. The only FX rifle I own is a Royale 400 which, as Gerry described above is a very simple, dependable rifle.

I tinkered, fiddled, and tweaked my Impacts until I got them where I wanted them to be performing at and then left them set.
The only O ring problems I have had with any Impact have been directly attributable to me and my busy fingers.
Same deal with my Crown, tweak and tune until happy, then leave it set.
The Wildcat was good from the get go and has only had the seal in the foster fitting changed over the span of 4 years or so.

I shoot my FX Crown MKII and Mavericks all the time. No one that owns an FX spends all their time tinkering with it. That is a myth. I've owned 12 FX guns over the past 20 years and never had a single problem. You need to be careful and filter through people that don't know what they are talking about, just like in real life. I'll more than likely by another airgun before the years is out and there is a 90% chance it will be an FX. Just like ChRiSiS said, above, if they were as bad as some of these people claimed they wouldn't be out of stock all the time and winning competitions. Unfortunately, I took several years off after losing the vision in my left eye. When I came back, I unfortunately listened to some of the bad press FX was getting on here and I bought another airgun. After 6 months I sold that one, bought an FX Maverick and never looked back. I was really disappointed in myself for not knowing better than to listen to some of these people concerning FX as I have owned high end airguns since 2000.
I'm not saying there are no other good airgun makers out there, but it is hard for me to justify buying an airgun that is less powerful, can't tune, can't change barrels, can't upgrade and can't shoot slugs to save its life. Just an opinion, take if for what it's worth and have fun in the airgun world.

There is no law in effect that mandates one must start twirling the dials on an Impact, Maverick, Wildcat etc....
99% of the time, the rifle will shoot fine if you air it up, add ammo, and start fanning the trigger.
The rub comes when you want to set it up for a specific purpose that is in all reality a niche purpose like shooting slugs through a PELLET rifle. THEN you must start the twiddling and tweaking process.
Best to be fore armed with much research before hand though, lest ye become one of the many that post about how my FX******* now won't shoot straight.

Here at FX Nation nobody tinkers, that's just a myth. Ignore all the posts regarding how to tune, all FX guns are ready to start winning right out of the box. With thousands of guns sold per day the QC is far above any of the other brands, and the parts are just a phonecall away. Don't hesitate, buy one for each day of the week. 🤣

Hey its the guy who thinks it doesn't matter if an 800mm is on a Crown or an Impact. "It's the same thing"

FX thread? Gotta spread that hate.

All really great perspectives. I'd love to hear from more of the FX Nation as to their successes and challenges with these guns.

Does anyone shoot standing with Impact or Maverick? I find myself most interested in these.
I have a Gauntlet 2 now and its a bear to shoulder. (I'm soft, I'll admit. lol)

...guess I'll have to dig into some of the tuning threads to see what people are doing and why.

In my opinion, which doesn't mean much, out of the box FX impacts are easy to tune and shoot pellets really well. They can become combersome and heavy when you start adding all kinds of features to them. If you mount it to a decent tripod stand then it really isn't as big of a deal when standing. I personally try to find a rest in hunting circumstances, whether it be a bipod, my mirror, window frame, a log or a tree branch.

When the gun is tuned for slugs and you find that perfect harmony, I personally will never use pellets again. Nearly the same price for worse performance. It can be a lot of trial and error, with a lot of money burnt away on varying setups. That is why I said go 30 cal. It is already tried by many and proven.

I like to shoot cartoons of people tinkering

Tweaking means different things to different people. To many it means a constant cycle of gravitating around a statistical mean… chasing ideas.

Having a Marauder I know that kind of tweaking all too well.

But I prefer the kind of tweaking that works toward a specific goal, always a consistent unvarying accuracy. I attained that in PBs. The Marauder was my fir PCP, and I’m not sorry.

But. After a couple years and 20k pellets of that I’d learned enough of that kind of tweaking nonsense.

I got a Daystate Huntsman, and went back to chasing my limits… not my gun’s.
