If you're really only looking for small game hunting you have a lot of options. But these are my criteria for a truck gun:
1. Relatively compact
2. If it gets bumped and scratched you won't be crying over it
3. Adequate power for multiple scenarios (you never know what you come across). Also should be able to shoot slugs. Semi-auto may be considered a plus for certain scenarios.
I would prioritize those criteria over super high build quality, extreme accuracy and refinement. As such, my vote goes to a gun I previously owned -- AEA Terminator
Want even more power, lighter, even more compact, and half the price of the Terminator (but no semi-auto)? AEA HP Max
Heck, I'd even call a regular wood stock Challenger a pretty damn good truck gun. For $359 you can toss it around worry free. Pick your caliber...
