Newbe dumb question

If you suspect the gauge is leaking, maybe verify with a few drops of soapy water?
Thanks for all the replies. Six hours into balloon test on barrel, fill port, & gage and not showing any leaks there so far. Will wait it out overnight. The Syn Mrod I returned leaked from 3,000 to 2,000 PSI overnight. Balloon tests and soapy water never did find that leak. So where else could it be leaking?

Found it ! Learned a few things: I don’t know how to do a good balloon test, nasal spray bottle is good for soapy water, and leak is at gauge adapter/tank joint. So now do I depressurize before tightening joint or not?

Not. Benjamin tech support wants me to take out gauge & put 2 - 3 wraps of Teflon tape on the threads. If that doesn’t fix the leak they will send a new gauge. Thankfully I have the depressurizing tool. Impressed with Benjamin customer service.

They don't have an o-ring under the gauge? Interesting. Be sure NOT to get any tape in the little tiny hole on the bottom.

DO NOT USE !!!! Soapy water around the gauge !!!!
The water will enter around the fitting & hole threw tube and get INSIDE the air tube at that area and RUST TUBE !!!

You can do this with soapy water ONLY WHEN you plan to tear rifle apart irregardless & dry off where wet.

WD-40 the more prudent choice as it will show bubbles too, tho not soapy bubbles

Thanks for the heads up. Tried WD40 and it does bubble nicely with tiny bubbles, not the big soap bubbles. I have learned something today - thanks.

So, putting the gun in a bath tub isn't a good idea? Asking for a friend.
