Newbie question about first PCP

Hi folks,
I'm a newbie to this forum and to PCP shooting. I have a question that will no doubt make me sound like one...

I bought my first air rifle - a .22 caliber Walther Reign (version 1). I plan to use it mostly for pest control around the farm. I purchased it from Krale in the Netherlands. It arrived here in the States (upstate New York) just a couple of days after I ordered it! I bought it overseas because the price was very good and because I wanted the Euro version so I could easily put a moderator on it. I understand it's also regulated, at least to some extent.

So here's my question: The rifle was pictured on the Krale site with a Picatinny rail. All the photos showed it with that rail and the description clearly stated the same. When I opened it, I noticed it had an 11mm dovetail rail on it I've got an email into Krale to find out what the deal is with that, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't make a big deal out of this. The only accessories I planned on buying for the rail are a set of scope rings and maybe a tactical flashlight mount (if it will fit). I plan to put a bipod on the underside Pic mount. All my centerfire and rimfire rifles have dovetail scope mounts, and in fact, I only have one scope on any of those, so it's not like I'm committed to a pic rail other than for the more tactical look, which isn't really that important. So it's not that big a deal if the Walther has a Pic rail or a dovetail, but I'm just wondering if there's something else I should be aware of. The Reign certainly isn't powerful enough to worry about scope movement from recoil, so other than possibly more flexibility with scope positioning with a dovetail rail, does one rail style have an advantage over another? I don't know what Krale will say, and I know I can buy an inexpensive dovetail to pic rail adapter if need be. What do you more experienced PCP shooters think?

Thanks for your input!
Mike

If the picatinny rail was supposed to come with your gun? You might inquire… For practical reasons? The dovetail is fine, on one of my guns I actually removed the picatinny so that I could attach my rings to the dovetail to have a lower scope height.

First image rings on dovetail, the second on picatinny.

I stick exclusively with true Picatinny rails when I can. I am often moving scopes from PB guns and PCP guns back and forth, so having just one mount is ideal, as you have already learned. I can move a scope and have it zeroed in just a few minutes. 11mm to Picatinny adapters work fine but I would at least try to get what I ordered if possible. As for height, I don't like low mounted scopes with tight cheek welds, so a riser isn't a problem for me.

Does the gun you received have an elevated rail like the one in this photo, but it is an 11mm dovetail rather than Picatinny? Does that rail connect to an 11mm dovetail on the gun?

If it is a separate part that can be added on I bet they will send one. Also you can buy an adapter that is picatiny on the top and dovetail on the bottom. Such adapter will basically convert it to picatiny. Finally the reign is not regulated. You really should invest in a chrono if you haven’t already so you can more easily find the sweet spot in the fill pressure. I’ve seen some videos and if I remember correctly you will be best off only filling the reign to like 2800-3000 psi and shooting 2-3 mags and refilling back to 3k

Yes, that's my understanding also.
I'm confident they'll offer to send either an adapter or a rail replacement, but we'll see. I'll be fine either way! ;-)

Correct - the one I received has the elevated rail but with an 11mm dovetail. It looks like either a long or short pic rail would screw onto the dovetail rail.

Yep, at the very least I'd like to know why I didn't get what was pictured and described. If there's nothing they can do, I won't push it. Like you say, the dovetail is fine. Thanks! NICE Brocok! Maybe someday... ;-)

Mikey -

Just get the Picatinny to 11mm adapter and be done with it. It does NOT raise the sight/scope, but about .13" . Not worth worrying about in my book.

I have two Daystate Pulsars. Up on the MUCH higher end as far as cost goes. Guess, what, they come with 11mm rails...ONLY. So yeah, I have the adapters on both guns, as well as on a couple of pistols.
The EAGLEVISION adapter is a better product than the UTG adapter. At least in my experience.

One hint - You can buy either the long adapters of short single groove adapters. I would buy the long adapters, this is what I did. Much more capabilities' of being able to use different rings/mounts AND having the overall strength for a "solid" mount.

HINT #2 - Be sure to look into the "trigger spring" (shortened ball point pen spring) swap..! A lighter spring makes the trigger pull MUCH nicer.

Thanks! Good advice. You’re right.

I don’t really like the single groove adapters and I’ll probably go for the longer ones if I don’t get something from Krale. I read about the pen spring idea. I’ll see how the trigger feels once I get going.

Well, I have an update. Krale wrote me back and said the product description never indicated that the rifle had a picatinny rail and that I “should check the description”. I know what I saw on their website, so I did check again and sure enough it now shows the rifle with the dovetail rail. They changed it!

It’s very disappointing they would do that, but it settles the issue for me. Thanks again for all your feedback.
