HW/Weihrauch Next step up from HW50

95 is the next step up and .20 or .22. Have both, the 95 in .22 and it's cousin the Beeman R9 in .20, both are excellent shooters and before someone babbles about lack of ammo choices in .20, don't let that bother you as I have all 4 of those ammo choices and all 4 shoot very well.

My first Weihrauch was a 177 Hw95 my second and third were 177 Hw30s. Then after all the hoopla I heard about the 50s I bought two. One in 177 and one in 22. I sold the 22 Hw50. I've since added three more Hw95 family guns. A 20 cal R9, a 22 cal Hw95 and a 20 cal Hw98.

I certainly don't need all these guns. Each one has it's place. I enjoy my 30s the most. The 50 is my best handling gun and my 95s are my most accurate break barrels at >30 yards.

As far as caliber goes, 95s are good in 177, 20 and 22. My 177 is the most accurate, then the 20s, then the 22. None of them are inaccurate by anyones standards. I'm splitting hairs here.

The shot cycle improves and energy increases with each step up in caliber. I've tuned lot's of these guns and my personal guns are pretty typical for the type. My preference is for 20. It's a nice blend of accuracy and shot cycle.

If you can afford to add a 95 to the arsenal. They're worth having. If it's a stretch and you don't need more power or range you can skip them. I shoot my 30s the most followed by my 50. I still love my 95s but they don't get used as much as either the 30s or 50.

The HW30/R7 was my favorite springer for decades. Still love it but it’s rarely used anymore. The HW95/98/R9 is by far my favorite any more. Have both in 22 caliber. For me living out in the country where distance is great, the 30’s in 177 just don’t get it.

My first Weihrauch break barrel was a .22 cal Hw50s, my second a .177 cal R7. I've since added a .177 cal R9. All three are equally accurate. I agree the Hw95/R9 is a good step up in power over the Hw50. I probably shoot those three an equal amount but my Hw50s is so comfortable to shoot.

The HW 50 (aka HW 99 when first introduced) is an ingenious re-design of HW's original HW 50, made 1951-2000. The two have identical receiver tube length and diameter - they will interchange stocks - but the newer 50 is different internally: longer stroke, 26mm piston (old one 25), and revised trigger attachment (no more threaded rear section), to squeeze out an extra honest 100 FPS in .177. The HW 95 has more power but the 50 is a brilliant combination of power and compactness.

I also like the two-piece cocking linkage, a detail shared with the HW 30 and original HW 50. The fore end avoids a long slot, and attaches via a proper bolt in a steel seat underneath, instead of two screws in the sides. The current HW 50 is a great-handling, solid-feeling rifle that retains an old-skool vibe.

I went with a Hw30, and an HW97K in .20 cal. I also have a .177 cal Beeman Webly Vulcan, for comparison. I shoot at 30 and 75 yards mostly plinking. I'm also shooting from a bench.
The accuracy at 30y from all of these is so good that the targets need to be small to get any challenge. I wind up shooting them at 75y, or switching to pistols at thirty.
At 75y the HW30 slaps the Crazy Eights paddles with authority, but the .177 Vulcan only wobbles them.
At 30 yards, my perception is that the Vulcan slaps the crazzy eights harder than the HW30. The .177 pellets, JSB Exacts, has a better trajectory, and I was able to dial the 75y range into scope easily. That isn't happening on the HW30.
The .177 sufferes more in the wind, but all of them can hit shot shell hulls at 75 yards in perfect conditions. I just shot the 97K at 75y in a crosswind and held a 3 moa compensation, and still went wide. The flag was straight out.
My only ,22s are PCPs, and they are too rough on my targets, having a tendency to knock them down.

Only Weihrauch I have is the 95 in .22. Both my wife & myself enjoy plinking from the back deck and sometimes I can shoot a 5 shot MOA group BUT not always. Here is a recent 10 shot Chrono listing which I use as a benchmark. A very Happy & safe 4th to all of you good folks.

Your question is very interesting. I bought the HW 30 and HW 50 about 3 months ago at the same time and love them. Turned me from 100% PCP guy to 50/50 springer/PCP. I've been vacillating between buying the 95N walnut stock $629 and a Cometa Fenix 400 USC Premier walnut stock. The way I found this thread was your super positive Cometa 400 USC comment on another thread. The Cometa is $339 and I'm adding the $60 tune for $399 total, $230 less than 95N. Advantage Cometa is price, shorter, silencer and a bit lighter. Same power but the 95N is a classic. Cocking effort for both appears nearly identical. My questions for you; did you ever make the Cometa video you were talking about? If you own the 30, 50 and Cometa why are you contemplating buying the 95? Maybe you have the dreaded I need more guns disease. 😉🤣 Do you still enjoy the Cometa? A bit of feedback is appreciated since we both seem to be thinking along the same line. I just sold my 3rd PCP in the last 3 weeks so I got dah fever. More cash pushed the HW95N back up to even with the Cometa!

Good question re the cometa 400. I need to get around to a video review. I still like it, it's a great gun for the price. I like how quiet it is, and it's putting out about 18fpe in a small package. I actually think the cometa 400 has more power than a hw95, but I could be wrong.

I'm going to gift the cometa to a friend who needs it more than I do, so I'm contemplating the 95 or something similar. I do think the HW quality is certainly higher than the cometa, but there's nothing wrong with the 400usc.

It does. The 95 in .22, mine at least, puts out about 15.5 fpe. Even for owning the 2 I do, the Cometa is still on my short list when money permits and in large part just because they get nothing but good reviews from owners.

Thanks Max you are spot on. Having 2 HWs springers I'm familiar with the trigger. No one is going to compare Cometa's trigger with a W's for sure. The Cometa I've been drawn to is the top of the line, Premier 400 USC that at least moved to a metal trigger from plastic, a big complaint in the past. On paper there is a lot of features to like about the Cometa and sometimes its exciting taking the path less traveled. I'm also not a fanatic about groupings, I'm an unsophisticated airgunner. I find it fun to shoot my 50 because its so imperfect, if that makes sense. Boscoe nailed it on the 50 in his response above. its a bit unruly. Moving to springers was a result of how bored I was getting shootin my PCPs. That said you're correct, i'll probably cancel my order on the Cometa for now, and get the 95, but I have no doubt I'll come back to the Cometa some day.

Reading between the lines, you tweaked my decision with your exceptional lawyer/politician response. Skills honed to not diss anyone or any thing in the slightest. So I spent twice the money and went all in on a new HW95N Walnut Field Pro. What pushed me over the edge was the ability to screw on a 1/2 UNF accessory only on the Field Pro, that's huge. I require as much peace and quiet as possible. Thanks again.

I do work in the Legal field so maybe I'm hanging out with too many attorneys hah.

I think the 95 Field Pro is a great choice though if you plan to own long term, in comparison to the 400.
