NIH discusses hearing damage with Air Rifle Exposure, recommends silencers.

Spook,

thanks for the info. 👍🏼
Wow, I'm all for your silencers. 👍🏼😊
And if I need a justification to buy one, this article will come in handy when "I have the talk" with my wife.
For that, this is helpful! Thanks! 😊 Downloaded and archived. ✅

However... — an investigation like this seems like a waste of energy (and tax payer dollars). Surely we have other more pressing problems..... 🤦🏻‍♂️
Seems like some professors needed another publication to get tenure....
Not really helpful....

The NIH you say?
Didn't that stand for "Not Intentionally Helpful (NIH)"?

Matthias 😉

PS: Sorry, the pitch you threw there was just too good. Had to hit it.... 🤣

PPS: Your silencer should finally make it to Peru for Christmas. Looking forward to it! 👍🏼

As someone who works at a pediatric hospital, I can say that we're seeing lots of kids coming in with hearing loss, tinnitus, etc. There are many reasons for this, ear buds, surround sound movie systems, video games, etc. A lot of studies are trying to assess all the various sources of sound around us to raise awareness that protecting your hearing and your child's hearing is a matter of importance. Scientific research saying silence(ers) are golden is a good thing.

I grew up shooting guns with no hearing protection and going to concerts with no hearing protection because we didn't think of it then. Now I have tinnitus and it's painful and difficult. I don't go to concerts, movies or loud restaurants. I certainly don't shoot powder guns, though I own them. I was recently shooting air guns outdoors and realized later I should have been wearing muffs over my ear plugs. I'm glad for the loudness ratings on sites like airgundepot. Any research I do is related to sound. And most definitely if I continue on this path a moderator will be paramount.

By the way, I am considerably better at making them now than I was when I made yours. We may need to replace that one.

Your are very kind! 😊
The magic date would be Dec. 16. And a Chicago address.
I will have for comparison now a
• DFL Sumo
• DFL Shogun

I'm excited to hear that you continue to advance! 👍🏼 More power to you (or more silence)!

Matthias

Did you just find this 7 year old study? And now we have to wonder about those who will try to put more restrictions on the discharging of air guns. I mean if they are so damaging then their use, especially around or by children should be restricted or even better yet prevented, right?
I mean look what happened with smoking and it's danger to those around you. Now you can't smoke in most public places.

I'm pretty sure you can't shoot your airgun in the same places you can't smoke already. LOL

I was surprised at the peak dB's from air guns in the study. Never would have thought them that high. I shoot 22lr all the time out of rifles with no hearing protection, never bothered me. Also shoot cannons in CW reenacting for 30 years now. No hearing issues at 58. The loudest air gun I have is a Crosman 2240. That's painful shooting indoors without a moderator. Also the light 5.71gr H&N FTT greens go supersonic (1,200 fps) out of my R9; those hurt a bit also. Drop to 1,050fps subsonic no issues whatsoever.

Just read it, and I'm not surprised in the slightest. Just about what I expected. When reading airgun forums, I quickly close any thread where someone is using a smart phone app and showing how quiet their suppressor is on their air gun. It is so much bull, I have to close the thread instantly before I reply harshly.

Hi everybody, new member here. I was wondering if I could use moderator from 22lr on a air rifle. It fits perfect and air rifle is also in 22. Thank you for your answers. D.

Mechanically yes it should work fine. An airgun suppressor, if legal, could be destroyed on a firearm.

Check your laws in Slovenia. There are already other posters quoting US law matters.

Here in the US I could use my legally acquired rimfire suppressor on my airguns but the threads are intentionally a different size and the airgun suppressors are very available and affordable. So I don’t.

But your question, what is the SUSPECTED trap supposed to be catching? People who are willing to trust someone recommending the use of firearms suppressors on AGs? I don't know.
Not illegal and does not setup anything. Perfectly legal to use a firearms suppressor on an airgun and I have read more than a few peoples responses that indicate they use rimfire suppressor on their airgun. The only thing that questions sets up is the chance for the responder to start steering the person asking questions into doing something illegal. If you are doing illegal things and plan on helping someone else do illegal things I guess you should be paranoid :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for the answer. Here in Slovenia the airgun moderator is not easy to buy because there arent any. The airguning is not very popular. We do have some airgun dedicated stores but not many. I have to order from Krale or airgunseurope.

Very well than to the subject matter, disregarding the "it's a trap" and other useless responses or lack of (missing).
All of the test rifles are mechanical piston to which a silencer would have had little to no effect in quieting. The sound of the rifles' mechanism would flaw any attempt to test the rifle's actual muzzle report.
Disregard as a poor example of the benefit of a silencer.

Well you know what they say, "Even a blind pig finds an acorn every once in a while." Moderators work on spring rifles.
