Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40AO EFR vs Leupold 3-9x33AO EFR questions who has used them?

The Nikon is about 80% of the Leupold for about half the price . I've owned both of them several times . When I have needed a compact scope and had the extra money I bought the Leupold. When I didn't I bought the Nikon and never felt like I was shorting myself . Both track well and hold up to most ANYTHING. The Leupold has better glass , but the Nikon is Way above average for the price no doubt . You can't go wrong with either . The leupold is discontinued , and the Nikon is also . But AoA still has new Nikons , and you could still order the EFR thru Leupold custom shop not long ago . Hope that helps some .

JWR is spot on with his opinion of both brands. I have several Leupold 6.5-20x EFR's on .22 LR and center fire competition rifles. I currently own two dozen Leupold scopes on a variety of rifles. I recently had a Nikon 3-9x EFR Prostaff on a moderate strength spring gun. The clarity and mechanical quality on both are similar. Overall quality is comparable on both. However, the Nikon failed on me in 30 days and 1500 shots. The reticle loosened up and rotated out of position. I bet the Leupold would have met the same fate, too on this gun. I got a warranty replacement Nikon but just sold it the other day. The Nikon was a nice scope for the money and I wished it had lasted. It will on the right gun.

I would also look at the Clearidge RM . I've only owned one a Mildot 3-9 and it was in the same class as those 2 scopes . I personally prefer the other two , but it's a very good alternative scope. PS thanks for the compliment about my silly ass videos :) Of the 3 I'd rather them Leupold , Clearidge, and Nikon ....But that's REALLy splitting hairs . All 3 are excellent.

The Bushnell Engage is another really Badass scope !! I saw the one I did a review on , on sale a couple weeks back for like 225...Killer deal

The Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40AO looks as though they are still available for sale at Optics Planet for $186.95

I got several Leupolds and yes they are FANTASTIC scopes! Haven't owned any Nikon scopes nor any Clearidge yet

and I too am interested as well if they are as good and clear as the Leupolds.

If I were to mount anything on the harshest spring gun it would be a Weaver V16 which has really great glass IMHO.

Edited I noticed checking again they are on backorder at Optics Planet.

Nikon quietly introduced a new version of their Prostaff EFR scope a few months ago. This one has 1/4 MOA adjustments and I'm guessing metal turret caps. The reticle still appears to the be same.

I have the first generation of that particular scope on my custom Tony Kidd barreled 10-22 and absolutely love it. Just wish they made it in a 4-12 with illuminated dot.

I have the Leupold, have used it on several air rifles and rimfires, and it is a very good scope. My only complaint is the one shared with all AO scopes. If you need to do much focusing, the AO is cumbersome compared to a side focus, which is the only type I will buy now. Although I have never owned the Nikon, I have found their scopes to be the Sony of the optics world, maybe not the best, but a great value. I have found the difference in brightness, clarity, etc. is usually not a problem except under the most adverse conditions; i.e., poor light. I expect you might find a similar advantage if testing under very cold or wet conditions, but my 68 years of experience have taught me at least one thing, that is whiskey sipping weather, not shooting weather.
