Not able to give accurate feedback.

Bring it back or don’t because it doesn’t matter. A green or red dot doesn’t make you into something. It is a tool. Soon we will have better ways to authenticate with new media, but no matter how far we go down the rabbit hole with Alice, you know, we will still run into the same existential crises with platforms whether that be a new media like Facebook or a thread like this: and that crises is whether or not this format of information adds or subtracts from organic person to person interactions. If the focus is on a ball rather than the content we are lost already. If the ball helps authenticate participation, no big deal. Abuse is going to happen anywhere, just like in real life, but there are also going to be little cry babies in real life too. If you can’t handle a red dot, don’t participate.

If Michael decided to remove it, he probably did so over a long time and measured the pros and the cons, and if it doesn’t seem like the green dot only is working I am sure he would revert to the status quo if the health of this board was in jeopardy.

Are the number of posts higher or lower since the previous system has been dismantled?

In a system where honest but flawed comments can be actively attacked via negative ratings (not just via posting the accurate data) appears to create double jeopardy for newcomers or less experienced but eager forum MEMBERS (not guests).

I'm in my second year of membership here and have not had a nice reception (compared to other forums). I never mind being corrected, since learning and better informed is what I come here to get. Lead on! But, giving people negatives....that's too much opportunity for abuse (IMO). I'm glad the negatives are gone.

Just another opinion.

A much better system I have seen used, is the ignore user option. If someone regularly offends you, you can click on their username and there is an option to ignore user.. Their posts will be blank to you with a link that says toggle to see this post, on the odd chance it is a subject you think might be meaningful. The worst among us have learned to abuse the flag post option in rapid succession to whine to to the moderator every time their girl feelings are hurt. It has been used on me many times, including by advertisers on this site. The ignore user option would save a lot of moderating effort. If someone rarely posts meaningful content or regularly offends you, simply ignore their posts.

I’ve never used the flag and didn’t really know what it was for. But I wouldn’t care to use it unless there was child abuse or something. Someone being annoying is just someone being annoying. Instead of having an ignore person button to bend the world to fit someone’s sensibilities, why not just ignore it in your mind? Also, what you said would not work here with people quoting one another as you would still have to mentally ignore them.

Might I add: already a very regulated site. I don’t think more control helps organic conversations.

For one thing, if it was still in place, you’d have someone giving out negatives to people who may use the Exclamation Point gratuitously, or to people that have something negative to say about certain airgun brand.

Seriously? That is lame. Funny, but lame.
