Umarex Notos Accuracy

Hi guys - I have a fairly OTB Notos I got a couple months back - I've only made a couple easy mods - Opened up the regulator 1/4 turn, polished the trigger mechanism (super smooth pull now) lowered its tension, and then drove in the hammer spring all the way in. Aside from cleaning with the patch worm and adding a picatinny barrel grip & bipod, not much else is modified. I'm dead nuts around 15-20 yds (My favorite perch is out the kitchen window, at about 20-30 degree angle down to a target setup at 15yds & a 4-panel of targets on plywood out right at 40 yds.) -
Anyhow - I've been tweaking cause i have issues with the 40+ yds grouping. Being dead center at 20, I go out to the 40yd, and first shot nearly always strays - but then I'll have the subsequent shots anywhere but bullseye. It's kind of random, too - around 4" apart from each other, some a bit high, some a bit low, and left or right. I can sometimes see the pellet pop out of the barrel and arc down to the target. I'd hoped by opening up the regulator and hammer spring i'd get more of a shot on a rope, but not the case. It did pretty well suck my air supply down too - I still get about 35 shots in from 3,500psi before it starts hitting red though. I'm shooting Diabolo 18gr pellets, which I read in this thread are the pick for accuracy - and don't think it's the pellet I'm chasing.
Is the gain I'd get from a mod drop block & plenum with an upsized canister enough to be considering as the culprit here? I've seen many posts with 50yds being no problem for guys - so hoping maybe it's just the pressure I need to push a little harder? I did clean the barrel a couple times so far, last time just a couple of days ago. If anyone has some thoughts on it, mods maybe even not requiring purchases I'd appreciate that a lot. Thanks a bunch!

Oh nice! I didn't know they made those! I do have a Chrony (The standard box w/ sticks) I just haven't used it yet. Thank you for the reply!
Does yourself or anyone else have experience with the 500mm FX barrel upgrade? I found a couple on eBay around $130 and come with a couple threaded collars that I highly doubt are moderators but it doesn't say. I did however see a slide-in -15db add-on by Terminador that could be a nice addition? I'm pretty set on upgrading to the longer barrel and tank, except that I'm not sure if I need to consider a thinner tank with more capabilities and no drop-block just to keep it lighter & easier to use in the field, or if a slimmer extended tank would still require a drop. I'm learning & new to the game but love putzing around with things and trying not to go nuts spending more than I'd pay for a new FX while just simply gaining 40-50 yd dimes. I'll take your advice on the chrony and at least revert the hammer spring and adjust in increments after tests. Thank you again for the help.

I have a 380mm barrel kit with an FX slug liner that started out as a 500mm liner that @Firewalker cut and crowned for me.
I like the skinny gun too much the way it is so I don't have the drop block/bottle mod. I have a plenum and plenum extension instead. I had previously installed a gauge block to increase my plenum size back before all the kits were available.
A moderator will screw onto the end of the kit.

I also had another question on my scope setup...It's mounted straight to picatinny - the scope itself is a modest Amazon purchase, around $80 Midten multi-scope. I was told by an experience shooter that scopes tend to get out of whack on air rifles fairly quickly & need to either be made specifically for it or mounted with some type of shock absorption designed for PCP's. Is that true? It's pretty decently made, the red dot seems to stay spot on, but since the accuracy issues at 40yd I'm not entirely sure if it's that getting bumped around & off-zero or just accuracy from out of the barrel. Any thoughts?

Oh nice that's some good info - so what exactly does the plenum extension do for the overall? FPS? Or more measured air release? Capacity? Definitely the type of simple mods I had in mind. Thank you -

And apologize for so many questions...but the slug liner...Is a liner a necessary post-barrel purchase to add or are those typically lined from the folks who sell them? I'm not 100% on what a liner is/does. Does it also have to be lined for slugs if you use them or does a standard liner allow that capability (like standard OTB barrel, is it compatible with slugs?)

Break barrels need special scopes because they have a double recoil. PCPs not the case. I would double check the scope is still tight on the rail.
What's your zero distance? If you consistently shoot between 20-40yds, I'd pick a 30yd zero and then learn the holds for each distance.

The mods got me 50-70fps IIRC and bumped my FPE from 20 to 24.

The kit does not include a liner(hard to call it a barrel after working at a rifle barrel factory, lol). You must buy that separately and they are around $110 I think.

Oh wow, that's pretty big! Does the longer plenum just increase power or improve capacity or both?
Curious about liner a little bit more - is it something you have to get for any new barrel or just to allow for slugs? I'm trying to search to learn what it actually is/does. Unless AM barrels aren't rifled & that's what the liner does?
Wow - barrel factory that's gotta give you some pretty solid insight as to what you're doing!

Holy Moly! I just ran a 15-mag of JTS Dead Center 16.08 gr through for the first time, and they all but closed that spread entirely! Dead bulls at 40 yds. - consistently. I saw them suggested earlier but assumed the Diabolo 18gr I was using were about the best, and these are $10+ cheaper! Wow. Impressed. If they stay consistent then a little extra power & rifling would probably have this thing dead nuts. Nice find!

I am fairly new to airguns but have been shooting and hunting with slug guns and rifles for a long time. I have had a few accurate rifles go crazy after several years and every time it has happened it has been the scope. The times I have skimped and bought a cheaper option, are the ones that don't group well. My first ever air rifle is a Notos I bought this spring specifically for sparrow control around my martin houses. My bird houses are exactly 30 yards from my house and my bone stock Notos drops sparrows all the time. I have a Bug Buster scope on mine which came highly recommended. With my limited knowledge I would put name brand scope on your gun before I would make any other mods. I would bet you should be able to keep a group about the size of a quarter at 40 yards with that gun. Mine does a little better than that at 30 yards.

It's a combo.
The liner is what FX uses for barrels. Not all airguns use a liner.
Insight from working in a barrel factory? I cut steel to barrel length and straightened barrels after drilling and rifling. I can look down any barrel and tell you if and where it's bent!
All my airgun knowledge was gleaned from these pages. Lots of good info here.
Ah thanks for that - So the Notos in question, is a liner necessary then if going with an aftermarket barrel, or only if you plan to use slugs? I asked the eBay guy about his barrel & said that the liner has to be purchased separately, but I didn't specify anything about slugs or pellets. I intend to get that plenum extension, assuming that the $30 extension is all I'd need to do the mod & not any additional parts or rings, etc... - Does say o-rings are included. And yes, I'm new to the forum but in just a few days have definitely gotten the answers to a lot of unknowns I had before.

Ah that's really good to know - thank you for the info. I'll look into that one - I wasn't sure how much magnification I'd need trying to hit 40+ yds, I see a lot of short-range sights that would be great but worried about seeing the target if I were to get more advanced and work up to longer ranges. I just saw some saweeeet ones but holy hell like $300 - $2,000 I was like nahhhhhh I'm sure there's a recommended solid entry/novice level scope that isn't more than the gun. Thanks again -

The FX liner is the barrel

Got ya - So I went ahead with the plenum kit - including the threaded barrel end for moderator and ordered a buckrail threaded suppressor for it. Did do some reading on getting the original moderator off, think I've got a good idea what to look for. So plenum kit, additional plenum extension, and think I'm good on the idea how to get that done. Last question is still on the barrel thing - Seeing it apart now I understand the "shroud" being what I'd be buying if I went for a 380 or 500 mm aftermarket. If so, I guess you wouldn't just swap out a shroud for a longer one without needing to get a longer liner (barrel), am I understanding that right?

Try fx hollow points, they improved my groups 15 gr.
