no photos because it was absolutely covered in mites, ticks, and other Nasties ick. I was considering a braise, but now I'm not so sure... He went into the freezer and I'll decide later once I've eliminated any disease vectors and can properly dress.
back to the important part..
So, I've been playing hide and seek for the past couple of days with one tree rat in particular, I named him "Nastyback". The guy was a total "Dick" in the rodent world. dominant, a pig, buggy, nasty, mean. My dog is/was scared of this guy.
Last year he had I think three or four bot fly type things growing out of his back and looked on deaths door last summer (Hence the name). He made it this winter by basically raiding my bird feeders, real messy about it too. All are so called rodent proof. This guy would just shake it violently knocking seeds out, or sometimes just trying to take off with the entire feeder. I also spike my bird seed and suet with ground cayenne pepper. This stuff is seriously hot and keeps most of the tree rats away. No, not Nastyback. I think he actually likes the hot stuff more than the regular flavor. Maybe an acquired taste.
The hunt is also complicated by my normally quiet and serene hunting ground is disturbed by both of my usually vacant vacation home properties being occupied by children and soccer moms for spring break. Donnyfl Sumo really helps here btw..
I had him in my sights three times today while he raided my bird feeders greedily eating hot pepper seed until his intestines were probably melting.
Every time, ended up holding off due to too much traffic around that might see.But on trip number four to this mexican squirrel buffet the stars aligned and a cheapo 14.3 grain crosman hp quietly chirped and did a clean pass through heart lung shot at an easy gimmie shot of 22yd while hidden in my master bedroom with the screen door open. Nobody heard boo. I was actually surprised when the tree rat went down DRT as the report was so quiet. The Nova Freedom is accurate and with the Sumo extremely quiet. I have two more than need to be eliminated. Earless, and Weasel. Their stories will follow (hopefully)
So, if you are having a glass of something cold and frosty this evening, give a toast to Nastyback. Today was a big day for him.
I need to invest in an x sight 4k pro so I can record this stuff.
