NSA 12.5 .177 slug results?

So I saw the 12.5 grain 177 slugs and figured might as well give them a try. Has anyone tried them and how are they at which speed? I know it’s barrel specific but I like to see if any one has any success with them especially with FX superior liner. They will be here probably next week and I am dying to try them out in my little PP700 carbine, shooting pellets out of it got boring. =P

I set up some in a Brocock Concept S6 doing the other end of the spectrum from Motorhead......going about 890fps. 

Barrel in that gun is a standard choked Lothar. 

They do pretty good, shot some pdogs with it out to about 115 yards. I was noticing they didn't seem to kill as well as a pellet in the same fpe range, even the sub 50 yard shots. I suspect I was ice-picking them with the lower energy. 

Overall they shoot well enough that I'm leaving the gun as-is with the NSA 12.5gr being this guns new projectile.

I'm going to scare you......because when I did it, it almost scared me....

Last year, in my never-ending quest for a slug slinging 12ftlb gun, I did this, but didn't follow it through.....

Setting up my Marauder with a regulator set at 1800 PSI, along with a Hill valve, transfer port, lightweight hammer, and a Crosman 26"barrel, i went and adjusted everything on the gun all the way down. Sending my 15 grain slugs through it, I couldn't get it any SLOWER than 1050 FPS!!!! Don't know offhand how much energy that is, but im going to guess over 35. I should've cranked it up a bit to see what i could get out of it, but that wasn't really on my schedule at the time........might have to throw some of those parts back into it, and give it a whirl........something tells me I won't be disappointed........

Been there done that .. yes slinging a little .177 cal pill that hard is a very EYE OPENING experience !!!



Sounds like you went the LONG barrel, heavy hammer, lower pressure & long dwell route. 

In my build was a somewhat shorter barrel, Very light hammer using a balanced valve having a tad higher pressure with very short dwell.



Two ways to get similar results ... and thats the great thing about sharing !! Sometimes there are a few ways to get to the same @ result.

Oh man you guys are getting me excited about trying these slugs. Might have to order at least couple of more boxes.

the standard PP700 has an 8 inch barrel and they can reach 15fpe fairly easy, add 8 inch longer barrel I see about 80fps faster. My goal is to get the 12.5 grain at 850fps which I think is doable on that capable little platform. Can’t wait till the USPS finally deliver the slugs!!!

I really hope my barrel has enough twist rate for the slugs and hopefully not too much choke. Will find out soon.

I had the guys at Crosman owe me a barrel, because I had one of the older ones that was damaged from manufacturing. What happened back in the day, Crosman used to drill the barrel blank from both ends, and they sometimes didn't meet well in the center of the barrel. They rifled it, and there was a dead spot in the middle. I brought the barrel to their barrel engineer, and he ended up making me a one-off 26"barrel, with a minimal choke compared to a regular barrel. Even at 26", it sounded like a cannon.

The Hill valve had a VERY light spring in it, so weak, if it was in your hand, you could easily bottom it out with one finger.

The hammer was actually the Hill 25 gram aluminum hammer. Not as light as some, but 2/3 lighter than the stock hammer. Only thing with the Hill hammer, it is not adjustable. Neither is the valve, it has no adjustable transfer port like the original. 

With my slugs, I'm tinkering at the moment setting up my 1720T to get them in the 11.5 ft.lb realm. I ordered a couple of regulators direct from Huma the day before yesterday, they are coming tomorrow. How's that for quick service!!! I hit a 12 gauge shotgun shell 5 times in a row the other day at 109 yards with it, only having a 12x scope on it. Going to put it in a rifle stock, put one of my Sightron Hubbles on it, and see what it is capable of for the FT game.....should be interesting to say the least.

I'm shooting slugs that i swage myself at 15 grains. They are an S2 nose shape with a flat base, at .1775 diameter. My 1720T digests any weight and design i am capable of creating, but there is one exception. It will not shoot anything with a hollow base well, any weight, any nose shape. I've also found the same thing for most rifles. I can shoot anything from 11 grains up to 21 grains well out of it. I chose 15 grains because our Field Target pistol distance is 10-35 yards. I zero at 30, aim dead on at all distances, except for 10 yards. I have to hold about a pellet width high, and a touch to the right. I also have videos of shooting the 1720T here and there, but offhand, don't know which ones those are at the moment.

With the 2020 FT season now over ... My prototype JSAR Raptor mini has been decommissioned from .20 cal with a conventional valve.

Due to the 22" TJ .177 not shooting slugs well it was replaced with a 22" LW standard choked. Valve in JSAR back to Balanced ( Of my own design ) Tapered transfer port & SSG etc ... This is now my .177 slugger and found that while the Bottlerauder could make 37 fpe the little Raptor mini is far happier calmed down a bit and shooting lighter slugs ( The 12.5 and NOT the 15 & 17.5 the BR was shooting ) The JSAR is stupid accurate, stellar efficiency running @ 29 fpe with the 12.5's

Just of note ... with a change up of a few internal part specs within the JSAR it too can make more power ... it just is a loosing battle efficiency wise with IMO the rewards of ability in shooting heavier .177's at @ same 1040-1060 speeds is not worth the increased air use.

Wait you shot slugs out of of the 1720T??? The 12.5 grain slugs are accurate at 650FPS???

I was bored and tried them out of Webley Tomahawk .177 springer. 658 fps avg so right about 12 fpe. Target was at 20 yards. Top was sighting in, bottom was something like 15 shots and while not great, not bad either and I've had pellets tested in that gun that shoot worse...lol.

I have several Lothar Walther choked and unchoked barrels, rifle length, and my slugs in general, don't like most of them. The exception is my TM1000, I have it shooting 9.24 grain cup base slugs rather well

This was done at 55 yards, right to left wind of around 15 mph or so. The high and low ones on the right side of the group, i pulled. The 2 to the left were aimed at the main hole, i wanted to illustrate how far a 15 mph wind would put them off. This was around 40 shots or so.

From what I have tested so far, the 1720T should group much tighter than this. I think it has something to do with barrel specs and twist rate. My slugs come out at .1775 diameter.

Don't know the "Why For" but slugs in many instances seem to do better once into the 900's and up to @ 1080 or so.

It is already an excepted fact most accounts that in close and lower power PELLETS are KING more times than not over a slug.

100% agree on that, I know at 30 yards the little 177 pellets starting to really get pushed around by wind and obviously more down the range and the speed really drops too. With slugs I like to hit targets at 100 yards because....why not! Hahahaha it’s been really fun tinkering with my little PP700 and with slugs the potential is quite tantalizing, although getting into the 900fps would be a challenge. 


i might convert my dreamline to 177 at this rate.
