I ordered some 6 inch long skinny sewing needles from amazon (20 needles for 5 bucks and change). They are sharp needles rather than the intentionally rounded tip ones. My plan is to slide a thin strip of plastic (just a piece cut from a drinking straw) up close to (or touching) the o-ring and then stab the o-ring with a needle. At that point I can keep sliding additional strips of plastic between the needle and the side of the hole until the stabbed part of the o-ring is lifted out of its groove. From there it should be easy to get the o-ring out with something that won't scratch.
So the plastic strips keep the sharp needle from scratching the side of the hole and also act as a fulcrum for the needle to be used as a lever.
Thanks guys for getting me to start thinking outside the box.
