Despite some of our TEXtreme BRS regulars being away at some little BB gun match out in Arizona, five shooters shot a total of eleven scorecards at our Bench-Rest Silhouette match on Saturday. With three classes offered for your/their shooting pleasure, BRS competitors may purchase multiple scorecards. Most on Saturday took advantage of generous, quantity-discount incentives.
As to be expected, scores in each of our three classes accurately reflect, and reflected, the ballistic parameters defining each class. This is especially the case in tricky wind conditions, like we had that in spades on Saturday! Otherwise the weather was nothing less than spectacular for Texans thoroughly baked by one of the most repressively hot summers we've ever suffered.
Jim Byrd being the sole 100 Foot Pound Slug Class shooter on Saturday, he successfully battled the constantly shifting winds to post a fine 29/40 score for the overall Match Winner hat-pin award. JB used a Midas Tac scoped, and Derrick Wall tuned, AGT Vulcan 3 shooting 49.5 grain Altaros slugs 885 FPS to beat the swirling winds. Great shooting, Jim!
As usual the 100 Foot Pound Pellet class was the most highly contested, with all five attendees entered. The first five places were separated by exactly one point each.
I shot two 100 Foot Pound Pellet scorecards in order to compare two rifles that I consider equals in accuracy and shootability for BRS and EFT competitions to 100 yards- my .25 Daystate Red Wolf HP, and my .30 FX Wildcat. However, true to my highly 'un-natural' nature
, I shot the Wildcat from bench-rest with affixed (short) bipod, but the Red Wolf from field target Hunter Class position using a folding stool and (longer) Trigger Stick unattached bipod. Believe it or not there are methods to my madnesses.
The interesting part is not that I finished first and last place(s) in 100 Foot Pound Pellet Class. It is that my first place 24/40 was posted by shooting the Red Wolf from FT Hunter position, and my last place 18/40 was posted shooting the Wildcat from bench-rest with attached bipod!
I'd have predicted the exact opposite. My Athlon Neos scoped Red Wolf shoots 33.95 grain JSB pellets about 920 FPS.
Jim Byrd took second place in 100 FP Pellet Class with an excellent-for-conditions 23/40 score. Jim used a .30 caliber FX Impact M3 topped with an Athlon Midas scope and shooting 44.75 grain FX pellets 878 FPS. Excellent shooting, Jim.
Jim Clarke was third in 100 FP Pellet with a 22/40. He shot a .22 Daystate Red Wolf firing 25.38 grain Rangemaster pellets 970 FPS, and scoped with a Hawke scope. Good Shooting, JC.
Four shooters contested the 35 Foot Pound Class. Jim Clarke used his (same) Red Wolf to capture the 35 Foot Pound Pellet class Match Winner hat-pin with an excellent 20/40 score. Of course his RW is powered-down for 35 FP Class, shooting 18 grain Air Arms pellets 930 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.
Jim Byrd was second in 35 FP Class with an 18/40. He used an (again resurrected) RTI Prophet in .22 caliber shooting 18.1 grain FX pellets 920 FPS, and topped with a Taurus scope. Good shooting, JB. I'll send you a bill for witch-doctoring that possessed Prophet back to life.
The next TEXtreme Airgun Sports monthly competition will be AAFTA style field target. The rifle match will be Saturday, November 4; and the pistol match Sunday, November 5. I specify AAFTA style in order to exercise the luxury of deviating from AAFTA rule(s) as I see appropriate. In this case I will (again) allow any shooter the option of shooting the Kneeling lane not only as AAFTA rules allow (offhand), but standing with an unattached bipod. You're welcome. There will also be an Offhand forced-position lane. Expect a course Troyer difficulty in the mid 30s (before wind multipliers).
Hope to see Y'all then.
Happy Airgunning,
Ron & Maggyy
