I'll start this off with an easy, cost effective, removable, adhesive vinyl wrap made by 3M. It can be heated (with a blow dryer) and stretched to fit. The texture isn't very grippy, but the overall look can be very effective.

Before and after photos of my 1960's vintage Voere .22. Before refinishing, the stock was so dark from about a half-century of who knows what that I had to look very close and hard to realize the wood underneath was a diamond in the rough. I refinished it with Fullerplast, a two-part catalytic varnish I used in my custom recurve and longbow-building venture 20 years previous. Originally an automotive dash-board finish (yes, really), Fullerplast is virtually impervious to solvents; much less anything less.

In my opinion, it is criminal to cover beautiful wood with cartoon graphics. But before anyone starts piling-on, not necessarily criminal to cover homely wood with graphics... and may be near-godliness to cover plastic with anything
