Okay I am waiting for the HFT season to start, so I am trying to keep myself amused, and being a science geek I like to test. I have seen a lot of buzz about the coming JSP .177 Hades, but I haven’t had the chance to try them yet. I have though the H&N Barracuda Hunters HP so I thought today to do a “test” looking at the “explosive” power of the pellet at sub 12 ft/lbs and 18 ft/lbs setting.
Gun: Brocock Compatto Sniper XR .177 cal / 4.5 mm FAC version
Pellet: H&N Barracuda Hunter HP - 9.57 grain
Chronograph: FX Chronograph
Settings on rifle: sub 12 and 18 ft/lbs
Shooting distance 8 m. (Length of my indoor shooting range)
Test items: small oranges / onions
Okay, this is purely a subjective test, but I did chronograph the speed of the pellets to confirm the setting and muzzle energy. When I used the low setting muzzle energy of the pellets was around 11.5 ft/lbs and at high setting, the muzzle at 17.6 ft/lbs.
I had some oranges going bad, so I thought to use them at “test subjects”, so I set them up and took shots at individual / similar sized oranges and onions. In a general statement, the destruction power of the pellet “doubled” between the high and low settings. And the expansion of the pellet was dramatic when I “clicked the switch” the energy transfer was dramatically visible. I will try the same test with JSB Hades in .177 / 4.5 mm when they become available locally. The only advantage I see with the Hades is they are a bit heavier, so maybe some better down range impact power vs the Barracuda Hunters.
So any thoughts or experience yet comparing the Hades to the Barracuda Hunters HP?
