Opinions on Semi-Auto PCPs

Hi Chris,

I shoot JSB 33.95 grain heavy's and MkII pretty much exclusively because they work so well in the Huben. I have shot the 25.39 grains in the past but prefer the heavys because they fit more snugly in the magazine. They are both super accurate.

This is good news because, as I said, I’m not that much into slugs. The fact that I tend to do most. Of my air rifle shooting on my own property means that I am always trying to minimize the likelihood of a projectile going off the premises. This is much more likely with a slug/bullet than with a pellet, given that in most directions I have between 250 and 300 yards of woods.

So, after thinking, and asking, and generally farting around, I reached out to Brian at EdgunWest, Plikington’s, and Kelly at KrazyKool airguns asking about the Leshiy 2, Steyr Pro X and the Huben K1. Brian got back to me immediately, went back and forth many times over the July 4th weekend, and was open for business on July 5th. I was really impressed by his answers, and by his follow up that I decided to go with the L2. Placed the order that afternoon and had had it in my hands by the following Friday!

Of course, within a few hours of deciding on the L2, I come home and get on AGN and what do I see in the Classifieds but an almost new Steyr Pro X! Sigh……

A momentary rush of blood to the head, and I’ve PM’d the seller with “I’ll take it” 😬

It arrived via USPS last Monday.

Now, I absolutely love the L2. Lots and lots of options for it, and of course I couldn’t resist a few. It started out like this…..

and now looks like this…..

At first I was underwhelmed by the Steyr, but as I played around with it, and added an extra magazine or two, plus an adapter from Krale which allow me to add a moderator (0dB) I’m really starting to appreciate why people love this gun. Went outside today, sighted her in at 25 yards, then spent a whole bunch of time shooting at spinners at 35 yards. Just perfect.

So, I’ve already sold 3 airguns in the last two weeks to pay for this, but I don’t think I’m actually gonna sell either one of these, so looks like something else needs to go. I can only thank my lucky stars that Kelly at KrazKool never got back to me. I can’t afford a Huben right now 😂

I've also got an LP50, but it's the Sport version.

To me...the "semi-auto" cycling sucks..! I keep running out of air, because of the fun it provides..! Just keep refilling the magazine, and not enough attention to the air cylinder pressure..!

Great gun, accurate and a good time to shoot with. The only semi auto that I have though.

MIke

Mike, I know exactly what you mean. That’s the “Joy of Semis”. Just keep shooting.

Damn Chris! Here I am thinking that I had a problem lol.

Good score.

Peskadot671, I KNOW I have a problem 😂

This is a bad time to own a semi-auto. Pellets are out of stock every where, especially in .25. I hate having to pace myself and conserve ammo. I hope stock will get back to normal soon. Last year I took a lot of criticism here for buying so many pellets. Well over 100 tins of various calibers. Everytime Walmart has the cheap crosman, I buy them because my Rapid MFR and my Vulcan shoot them well. I have 25 tins of JSB. 25 and I feel like I'm running low. The Leshiy 2 eats lead at a pace you cant imagine!

Hey brother, I know it’s a little off topic, but this morning I took my new Huben and shot over the chrony, and got a few readings of 2800, 2650, etc.

i know it’s not, before I establish anything else lol, but is it even possible for the air to propel little particles that fast coming out of that barrel?

Honestly, I suspect that either you are not measuring Feet Per Second, or something else is wrong with the chrony. Those are very much firearm speeds, and higher than even 17HMR rounds. I’ve certainly never seen that kind of velocity from an airgun. What type of pellets/slugs were you shooting? Even with a 15 grain .22 pellet 2800 FPS would represent 260+ Foot Pounds of Energy. From a Huben!

Chris if you got your L2 from Brian have you looked into the avs slugs? I got the kat40 version from him in 22 cal and it loves the .2193 avs 20grn. I’m mainly a pellet shooter so I’m set for hades right now but the avs was the most accurate I’ve shot at 40yards.

Cwooten are you set for meters per sec and not feet per sec?

I have not looked into the AVS slugs so far. In fact I have only shot pellets through the gun up to this point. I just received a set of jets from Brian, so now I am going to try to tune for a little more FPS/FPE. That should be more suitable for slugs, so if I can get some I’ll give the AVS slugs a try. One of my concerns regarding the slugs was whether or not they would fit tightly enough in the magazine. I thought I had read somewhere that slugs can tend to fall out.

Chris

Ha ha!

Sir no sir, MPS would read even lower, much lower than FPS sir. It has seemed to be accurate on the chrony since those first shots. I’m guessing it was “seeing” the particles in the new barrel. They don’t come to us all that clean, and I ALWAYS do my barrels with JB Non embedding bore cleaner right out the gate!

to clarify, I have the 2021 Huben K1 in .25, not Leshey.

Her is spitting out the Neilson 26.5 grain dish base HPs at about 1080 FPS. You can see more in my post about this. My young hen will pump it past 350 BAR if I want, so I suggest the ones that will not are prob ready for overhaul. I’m on my second model now, having gotten about 2 years life from the first, filling many many bottles and rifles before she gave up on me as far as pressure capability.
Getting .60 and smaller groups at 51 yards guys! Love it!

Chriss I would contact Brian and he will tell you the proper diameter slug you need. I know the .2193 fits my 22cal like a glove. You should have the new reg that is externally adjustable, I have only used it to raise or lower my speed. These work good to turn the reg

Cswooten….. I didn’t know if it was actually 280.0 or 260.0mps. Years of welding are starting to catch up to me and my eyes are not as good as they once were. I would have missed the decimal point. But particles flying out the barrel makes sense.

Cranky, I will do that and try out the AVS slugs. Unfortunately I got my L2 right before they came out with the new externally adjustable reg, so I have the old one 😢

I have (pre) ordered the new reg/tube assembly, so I’ll probably switch it out when Brian ships them.

But hey…. You know if it was measuring those particles flying at almost 3k FPS what that means, right?!!!

It means we can get projectiles super Sonic! (Far enough in to stay that was in flight)

lol idk, I just know what we think is the norm was yesterday’s impossibility. I hope we see the day. Most will resolve it can’t be done, especially those with much more physics knowledge than I.

Thanks for sharing all that you have shared. Your helping me become a informed purchaser, who hopefully wont regret whatever semi I'm going to buy.

Heres my question:

While you were evaluating the line up of semi's, what was it about the LCS sk-19 that made you decide to stay away from it? Or maybe I should say, what was it about the L2 and Steyr Pro X that made you lean into them as your choice?

You tube had me convinced the LCS was the best semi out there. But I came here to AGN to verfiy it, and now see there are few other decent options to consider.
