I've said a lot of disparaging things about P-1s (specifically), and a lot MORE disparaging things about spring-piston pistols (generally), CJ. That said, I'm wondering which specific quote you're referencing.

BTW and FWIW, I have also said a few nice things about P-1s; none of which compliment their firing behavior. They are very nice quality.

Although not a P-1, like the P-1 this Silver Star is a variant of the HW 45.

One that made me laugh was oozing a recoiling spring pistol being the hardest thing to master. And having never seen anyone do it.

Forget a P1/Hw45. Terrible choice. The guns are notoriously hard to shoot accurately. I have a 20 cal one. I converted to 177 because it was to expensive to waste that many 20 cal pellets. It is the most hold sensitive gun I own. It requires the utmost concentration to shoot reasonably well. I'll get a few good shots and if I shift my grip or even thoughts and I'm back to all over the place. It's a Bear to shoot.

A better choice in a similar gun in SSP is the Hw75 which is much easier to shoot accurately.

I have had several HW45’s over four decades. All gone now. I still have my HW75. Awesome gun. Better trigger than the 45. Smooth cocking and firing behavior. Top choice for me. But FWIW: both are overpriced.

If you are looking for some cheap backyard fun shooting, this might fill the gap. I put soda cans on plant stakes (upside down) at different yardages. Out to 25 yards. Then when hit with a bb, they really jump, spin and make a loud WHAM! These are my two favorite C02 bb pistols. Both have “blowback” action like the real ones. Everyone enjoys them. Much more accurate than one would think. The 1911 Tangfolio Witness and the German Luger. The toggle action on the Luger is a really cool. All metal pistols look and feel like the genuine thing. I did a distressed finish on both and added new “aged” checkered wooden grips. They are around $100 each.

If you give high points for quality like I do, you can match but you won't top HW and FWB.

Here is a thought, albeit an expensive pill to swallow if you go with quality components: how about modifying something you already have to make it different? Since the HW30 is the only gun you have two of that would be your logical choice to keep within your budget.

I love the old vintage 10m diopter sights. A really nice HW rear diopter is going to set you back $150 to $180. If you get crazy you can buy many different Gehman irises to screw in that will set you back another $60 to $????? You can even get cool irises to screw into the front sight tunnel. Add an adjustable recoil pad and you have a super sweet little gun that may encourage you to take up 10m paper punching a little more seriously and even get involved in those postal matches some guys enjoy.

Here is an example of an HW30 I added some nice hardware to.

Another thing to consider is a pistol. You can get a nice HW70 break barrel pistol for $200. They are not the equivalent of high end match pistols but they are minute of soda can accurate to 25 yds. and will challenge you to learn to shoot something different. For more $$$ but probably still within your budget you can find a used HW45 or HW75.

I've often wondered about the absolute MECHANICAL accuracy potentials of the HW 45 if it was possible to remove the human element; and being a pretty good pistol shot, fantasize about just how well I could shoot one if I was willing to devote myself to it. But then reality takes over, and I revert to more realistic fantasies...

The FWB/Walther class is a bit out of my league, and I am more looking at a sporter type rifle than a full-on target rifle. On this next one I would like to spend around $400.

I thought I might try a gas piston rifle since I have had a pcp, a co2 and springer but never a gas piston rifle. Looking at them it seems the rifles that might be more than just lower grade plinkers are all more powerful than I had in mind. Seemed that folks are willing to pay more for power but not for a bit more accuracy at lower power. I am still learning this stuff, but I am guessing lower power might make for more accuracy, lower noise, and will be more easily contained in my back yard.

The Norinco Hawk looked like it is no more powerful or loud than my HW97, but I didn't see much info on their quality. At $300 I don't expect Weihrauch quality, but do any of you know anything about it?

I tried to venture out into the pistol world with a V10, which I enjoyed a great deal, until it broke within the first 24 hours I had it. I may just take another look at one of the HW series that I do not have already.

However, the HW75 is a much more accurate pistol. It is a bit boring to shoot compared to the HW45. Does best at 10 meters in doors. A little under powered for outdoor cans but can be done.

The Goldilocks of the HW pistol line is the HW70 Black Arrow. The HW30 of the pistol line up. This pistol, a tin of pellets and some soup cans is all you need out to 30 yards. I have managed to hit a coffee can at 80 yards a time or two when the wind cooperates. Loves the JSB RS or H&N Terminators

I‘ve always assumed the gun is more accurate than I. Although I make that assumption with most of my guns ha ha ha. The fault lies not with the gun, but in my ability to be 100% repeatable with a device that requires it. Still a lot of fun to try. And I’d rather do that than chase after Madonna

If you're up for the callenge, & you like Weihrauchs, and accuracy, I recomend two!

The HW75 SSP pistol, scoped, with HN match ammo, at 25 yards. For fine accuracy

The HW40 SSP pistol with a red dot, for small target accuracy at 25-yards, like empty shot shells set vertical or horizontal.

I bought a C02 Crosman, 2240, "scoped", and its almost fun, but It dosent hold elevation consistently as the co2 presure changes.

I will include a link to a video I did shooting the HW75 at 25-yards.

I like to shoot 25 cal airsoft pellets at 25 yards with my HW 75.
Can't do that with an HW45.
I did shoot a 35MM film contaner at 100 feet with my P1. I stood there, got a good two hand grip, aimed, and shot that thing offhand, and scored a great luck shot. Lol
