Beeman P17 10-Meter Practice: Week 01 Check-In

I set out last week to see set up a winter indoor 10-meter range. I used the basement/storeroom/family room/etc. for this project. I then establaished a baseline target set fo reference. While it has been a busy week there were several practice sessions over the last week. Some directly with the 17, and with my laser training rig. The question, of course, is does this help at all? Do the groups look better? Do I score more hits?

The rig is a Beeman P17 in .177 with a Red Dot optic. I am shooting at 10-meters 2-handed offhand. I am shooting AA 8.4 grain Field Diablo. These are unsorted and coming straight from the tin.

The result? Well, while not great there was some improvement. Hopefully practice will continue this trend!

well the pellets are too heavy 7gr should be what i would use
the red dot sight is not precise at all and seeing that you are using a reflex not red dot it is the same story and at 30 feet covers too much area
the P17 even though people love the pistol i fine it very hard to cock and would never shoot it for accuracy
so, i would shorten the distance because if you can't shoot close you can shoot far
the open sight would be better but if you can't see them, they are no good
and one other thing the sight radius on the pistol is a bit short
so, shoot at 5 yards-meters and do that well and slowly move back

I would say your problem is not the accuracy of the pistol, but the force / effort needed to cock it. It raises your heart rate. The red dot is inferior to the iron sites. The correct sight picture is a clear front sight, a blurry rear sight & target. Also shoot both eyes open, you can put a piece of frosted tape on your glasses for opposite eye. Use the correct size 10m targets. If you are tired or shooting too long you’ll start practicing your mistakes. 15/20 good shots better than 40 bad ones.

All,

I appreciate I need practice. I am not shooting bullseye here though so bear that in mind.

I am using 10 meter pistol targets with the 7 to 10 ring extracted. B-40 I think it is. I see the targets fine. The sight has a smaller than 1 moa dot with cross hair. The sight picture is not an issue. The dot is 10 ring or smaller. It is much like the My Ultradot on my rimfire rig. I am good with the equipment. When in practice I will be largely in the 8 to 10 rings.

I shoot the P17 at 50 feet, with 50-feet targets, and stay in the black easily when in practice. I use my Laser Academy as well when needed which does fine as well.
