P17 with Optics

A few months ago one of my shooting buddies in Concord (CA) asked me to break-in his recently rebuilt FWB65.

It was difficult to cock and load, until I taught him the trick....push with the right & pull with the left..

I put a 1000 CPL pellets through and it loosened up very nice.

He tried it and liked it so he threw me a bone.

A Beeman P17.

Scott (motorhead) had shown me one a couple of years ago and he was impressed with the trigger.

You other owners know what I mean. This pistol should not be shooting as well as it does, huh?

So, the HIVIZ sights are good but I had a in-expensive red dot languishing in the drawer, so why not?

I put it on, leaving enough room to close the action and whoa.

This dog can hunt.

Very nice and increases the balance, too...

The scoped one is a Xisico 120D has a .22 caliber barrel. With a LER 1.5-4 pistol scope it is a really nice plinker. The .22 pellets are far easier to load than the .177 pellets for the Beeman P17. That one has the red dot from UTG. The Xisicos are different from the Beeman, mostly in details inside of construction. The .22 barrels of the Xisico are crowned very roughly and required attention to get it to shoot, but this one prefers air arms Falcons, and does very well.

Its good to hear you tried one in .22. I thought i was on my own when I tried one some years ago and not heard of anyone using a .22 version since.

I used a piece of Crosman 1322 barrel I had, cutting off the TP and copying the OEM barrel, recrowning the cut off end and machining the locations, but i decided to run the barrel full length through the plenum void at the front of the gun, stopping short of protruding out past the muzzle (Not liking the look of barrel extensions beyond the muzzle) I was concerned I would lose too much velocity going to .22 and wanted to try and claw a bit back by increasing the barrel length a touch....It ended up just shy of 8 inches long, instead of the 6.75 inches...and worked great. 370 fps with Hobby.

The Xisico isn't built to the same tolerances as the Beeman, it has a one piece piston, and the trigger stampings are pretty rough compared to the Beeman. Xisico doesn't have the set screw retainers for the pins and it doesn't seem to have the same compression as the Beeman, it is slower in .177 caliber by ~50 fps. I leak tested the Xisico with new o-rings, it sat all night and had a good pop the next day when dry fired. I have been building up the piston face with aluminum adhesive tape, it is up to the mid 380 fps range, where the beeman is ~420 fps with 7.0 gr meisterkugeln. After crowning and polishing the bore and shimming the barrel for breech seal, the .22 is shooting at ~330 fps with Falcon 13.43 gr., I haven't played with the piston on it yet.

I recently put a Feyachi RDS-22 Micro Red Dot Sight 2 MOA Compact Red Dot sight on my P-17.

I'm liking it just fine. I got the sight on sale at $10 less than what the current price is. I'll be using it as my primary tackle box pistol for snakes while fishing this year. I'm always in search of the perfect tackle box pistol. This one comes very close to being ideal.

I'll probably continue to use something like a Daisy 415 as a back up pistol. No harm to firepower if the shot from the P-17 doesn't kill the target outright.

Be careful buying cheap sights. This note is written on some -

Based on customer 'feedback and other sources, an astigmatism (uncorrected or with prescription) may cause blurry reticles on red dots (Double images) and other prismatic optics. If there is an issue with the reticle and you think this may apply to you, please consult a professional for more information on astigmatism and prismatic optics.

Higher quality sights fix this problem.

My P17 has a red dot much like the original posters. The base company must manufacturer those and sell them to a hundred different companies. Mine is just like that on the outside, but for Crossbows. It has three dots for the retical.

And yea, the dots aren't very crisp (probably my eyes). They have a nice halo around each dot. But it's sorta usable.

I just nailed a hosp off my bird feeder using my P-17 and the Feyachi red dot sight I put on it. W/ the tiny 2 MOA red dot, the heart of the hosp was a huge target.
