Peep Sight on a Marauder

I've had my Gen 1 Marauder for 9 years or so. Plenty of time to get to know the gun and form opinions about what I like and dislike about it. In particular, I dislike the balance of the rifle with the scope on it. So I decided to eliminate the optics first. I realize I could get a lighter scope, reflex sight, or whatever, but my Benjamin 397 has a peep sight and I've yet to find anything more comfortable to use. I decided to go the same route on the Marauder but the lack of a front sight was going to make setting up a peep sight something of a challenge.
I spent a couple of months figuring it out and I managed to design and 3D print a front sight solution (another hobby of mine). It slips over the threads of a DonnyFL Marauder shroud adapter and can be held in place by the thread protector or a moderator. It's pretty tight on its own, but I plan to use a small amount of RTV sealant inside the front to make a semi-permanent bond that should resist moving when changing out the thread protector for a moderator and vice-versa.
Of course, the rear sight is a Williams FP-AG with Target Knobs. This is a step up from the Williams I have on the 397. The click-adjust turrets are a treat. A bit pricey for an experiment, but I'm not sorry. I've mounted mine just forward of the magazine slot, figuring to keep it directly on top of the breech-end of the barrel.
Oh, yeah. There's this other thing I did a few months back when I decided against selling this gun. I bought a Lothar Walther barrel for it. I crack myself up. I'm gonna put a LW barrel on an Mrod, but I'm gonna toss the scope in the trash? Yep, that's about the size of it.
I had a minute for a few shots with it in the basement pistol range this morning. 6 yards, standing freehand, .177 JSB Monsters sailing at about 920-930 fps. My guess at elevation was spot on, but windage on the first 2 shots was to the right about 1/2 inch. 7 clicks left as a WAG, and the following 3 shots were on the money. Then two more 5 shot groups, standing, freehand. Wow! Gonna need to see how it does at 30 yards later this weekend! Was it worth the extra ~$200 for the barrel and the sight? Don't answer that!

I like your solution.
I wanted to put iron sights on my Dayatate CR94, no front sight. I ended up buying a sight product sold by New England Airguns. This clamps on your receiver and yields a 12" long front to rear peep. I am amazed at the accuracy I get with only 12 inch span. It is longer than most pistols sight span yet considerably shorter than rifles.
Speaking of short stuff ...........my Anachutz ZM 2002 Field Target rifle has a short barrel of only 14 1/2. There are also many Field Target United Kingdom guys that have used high end 10 meter pistol barrels in their TX200"s and HW77/87.

Sorry, it's been a little while... The front sight is set up on OpenSCAD and easy to alter. Put in the new measurements and it builds the part. Now I am thinking about making one with a dovetail so I can put a globe sight on the front.
I've added a Gehmann adjustable iris (model 510PH) and moved the base back on the rail. I'm comfortable with it out to 25 yards so far, and working it out farther. The best part of all is that the Mrod is FUN again. It's a real change from spending the afternoon behind a scope. It challenges your expectations and (I think) exposes some poor habits that using a scope has allowed to go unnoticed. So, as far as stupid things to do with money, time and airguns go, I've done worse. It has saved me from buying another gun for the moment and brought a bit of interest back to the Marauder instead.

BTW, anyone interested in the front sight arrangement I've brewed up can message me for a copy of my OpenSCAD file. It is basically a flat text file a human can read and less than 30 lines including the comments. OpenSCAD is free on Mac, Windows and Linux, and is also available as a plugin for many commercial CAD products.

Borrowed you pic.. i like it and nifty idea ..

"but I plan to use a small amount of RTV sealant inside the front to make a semi-permanent bond that....."

Could you do this ?

Small grub drilled and tapped kinda thing.
Small detent in the barrel.for screw and voila!

Part of the problem with the Marauder is that the shroud may not always end up in exactly the same spot, as it screws on and off. I leave a gap between the shroud and the receiver, so in this case particularly, there is a variable I have not quite figured out how to deal with. For now, I align it with a plumb line (more or less, you don't get quite as much reference as you would with a scope reticle) so it is properly vertical. It is a PITA if you remove the shroud. But the grub screw idea may be the next thing I try. Might even make it with a printed screw, so it won't marr the shroud. I have a terrific thread library for screws and bolts, etc.

Sounds good . My hatsan mod 25sc the front is slip on with no index mark or detent for the setscrew . .

Also the kral puncher megas had a sight kit front and rear then they stopped adding it in ( stupid)

Also the front was adjustable for more fine elevation ( same as the hatsan 25 has)

But of course not available or out of stock . Kral turkey still shows them (??)

Anyway your shrouded gun front sight is pretty good for iron shooters that avoid guns that dont come with factory sights , you show a good option to overcome that .
..

I've considered it, and I may still do it. This certainly deals with the top-heavy problem. Right now, I am deciding if getting rid of the tip-over feeling is enough or if front-heavy needs to be dealt with as well. Not sure cutting down the stock will prove very effective. The real weight is in the steel reservoir. Still and all, it would be a few ounces.
I do like the stock longer when I'm shooting prone, but standing offhand has my left hand right in front of the trigger guard.

When i use my athlon Talos scope on my r9 it's top heavy feeling. It can be a distraction

I was thinking this way myself, looking at .177 × 380 mm, (14.9") barrel for my Fx Crown.

Yes but it brings that weight closer to your body.

This is true. I was handling it after work yesterday. It's still a hefty gun, to be polite. It could use a little off the butt and I'd consider taking as much as 8" off the front end. But that is another project for another day and another thread. Right now it reminds me a little of an M1 Garand, and I kinda like that. Overall, the balance isn't bad.
