What pellet shape and foot pounds of energy for a 22 cal and 25 cal pcp in your experience is appropriate for pests the size of prairie dogs, rabbits, squirrels and coons. Thank you.
I agree. I have had more success with domed pellets over hollow-points, etc. Almost every time I've needed a follow-up shot was then I was using hollows.Standard domed pellets have killed many a critter. No need for "hunting pellets". No experience with Pdogs, but rabbits need only a few fpe to the noggin, squirrel I prefer 15 fpe on impact, and coons I go with 25 cal and up with 50 fpe+ just to make sure it's anchored. I've had them need a follow up with 30 fpe 22 head shots.
I think that’s too general. Can I kill a squirrel by way of throwing a stone at it? Sure. Should I? Maybe not. For the usual Airgun targets I’d go at least 5-10 fpe per pound if you want to use something pound related…I recall someone using a rule of thumb when it came to knowing how much FPE was needed for an ethical kill, including shot placement as always. I think they stated 2fpe for each pound of animal weight?!?!? Does that sound reasonable?
Obviously, you'd need to be aware of typical or at least above average weight of the quarry in your area.
7 yards is point blank. Nice work but that certainly don’t apply to down range huntingShot placement is just as important as energy. Even 12ft/lbs will take a raccoon. $99 Gamo at 7 yards. View attachment 521442View attachment 521443
Here we go. . The 12 ft lb debate. …… I shot a Gorilla with my R7 at 96 yards uphill into the wind through a hole in a branchSo i guess all the coons and squirrels are playing opossum when i shoot them with my .177 10.3 G pellets and a whopping 11.6 FPE at the muzzle ? 20 to 30 yards .
What I'm saying is 12ft/lbs at impact is more than enough for a big raccoon as you can see the size in the picture. But it only worked because of shot placement. Vitals or head shot doesn't need a crazy about of power to be effective. I've killed squirrel and rabbit at 30 yards with that same gun that starts at 12ft/lb at the muzzle. 7fpe at impact will absolutely kill rabbit, squirrel and prairie dogs. Calculate what you need to begin with power wise to maintain that amount of energy at the distance you're going to be shooting based on the most accurate ammo you can find. Even if it's a lower BC. Again the shot placement is the most important and we owe that to what we're trying to harvest or dispatch. Those are minimum power levels. It's certainly okay to use more power but it's not always necessary.7 yards is point blank. Nice work but that certainly don’t apply to down range hunting
at 25 yards that 12 ft lbs is down to 7 or less. Depending on pellet weight.

The question is specifically prairie dog, up to raccoon yet you keep taking about Russian boar and safaris. Do you actually want to give advice? Sounds more like you're trying to hunt Trolls! I'm probably not the best to give advice since airguns are my actual full time job and how I support my family. Along with all the advice given from several of the others whom I know and respect. I guess none of us are as qualified as you. So how about you educate us so we're not out here doing it wrong. You never see a Safari guide with a .22 rimfire …
shot placement is great when you have optimal arrangement. (And your a SAS SNIPPER) That being said ,I’ll hedge my odds and take advantage of the extra knockdown potential and error induced by the many factors in air rifles And ”wild” game.
we owe it to them. Not ourself.
