Pellet suggestions to a rookie.

Hello . I just ordered my first air gun. It's the Dan Wesson 715 4" Revolver. Being the beginner that I am, I was looking for advise on what kind of pellets to purchase. I will only be shooting at targets and backyard rodents. Also do I need the shells that go in the cylinder, which I assume I put the pellets in? Thanks for any feed back

Change that order to a 6" or 8" longer the better because the 4" shoots the weakest. 410fps MAX thats not enough to kill anything except maybe mice at 10 yards or less.

I have the long 8" possibly discontued version purchased years ago from Canada (no issues shipping to USA) and never considered the 4" because I wanted to be able to shoot the farthest with the highest power.

If you want to kill things you will have to limit your shots to under10 yards with that pistol. 

If you want to hunt then that's really not the right pistol to do it with.

Hi - and congrats. The gun should come with the shells to go in the cylinder. If not - check out Evike.com as they stock a lot of that stuff. 

CO2 guns are not that powerful, so going with heavy ammo isn't going to do any favors. I find the JSB pellets do well in most guns. For that gun I would choose a lighter 7 grain pellets.

I'm sure many people will tell you that isn't a powerful enough gun to hunt anything. And most likely not accurate enough either.

I would pray that it shoots the Crosman 7.4 grain pointed pellets accurately if I was wanting to kill small birds and mice at very close range under 10 yards.

After you facepalm, just think about the fact that I facepalm as a profession. Most recently, I facepalmed about a golfing question (I know nothing about golf even though I live on the first Tee).

Just changed my order to the 6" barrel. Fingers crossed I caught them in time to get the longer barrel.

First off, welcome to AGN. We are happy to have you as an associate.

There are thousands of years of experience in the collective of our little group. Sometimes it can feel like trying to drink from a fire hose when you first start to sip from the information pool.

Take a deep breath, relax and don't get blown over by the well wishes.

Shooting is an art, no matter what you are using. Gunpowder, blackpowder, pressed air or bow and arrow.

Do you have any experience with any kind of shooting? In general, pistols are much harder to shoot than rifles. Been there myself. My first jackrabbit cost me about $800.00 because I started off with a browning pistol and ran 2000+ rounds of 22lr before I admitted that I needed to get a rifle, and then had to relearn all the bad habits I picked up trying to use the wrong tool for the job. 

Have you had Hunter's Education? Even for our little air guns, the lessons and the safe practices learned will serve you well in the future. Don't be fooled, even a little air gun is a "real" gun and should be treated with respect.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I do have some experience with handguns. I dont really think Ill be needing to use this pellet gun very often, but got it to have when I occasionally do see a roof rat in my backyard. Im just trying to get the best pellet for the 6" barrel. You all seem pretty knowledgeable.

I shoot the lighter and medium weight wadcutters in my lower powered pistols at close range <25 yards and Diabolo pellets in the higher powered longer 50+ yard range gunz. Mostly cuz they are the most accurate in the gunz. The inexpensive Gamo match and Hobby pellets shoot quite well in my Beeman P3 and Daisy 747 pistols. The Meisterkugeln shoot just a bit better though.

Yo has it right on the barrel length suggestion. Longer barrel = more power and longer range.

Holy moly! Dan Wesson is making airguns now? I am so out of the loop. My father bought me a Dan Wesson .357 revolver (powder burner) as a gift when I graduated from high school. It’s still in his gun safe. Do they still make conventional firearms? I haven’t heard that name in years!

They really look like the real thing don't confuse them by putting 44mag cartridges in them!

Dan Wesson is still around. They are owned by CZ now and produce very high quality 1911 pistols and a couple revolvers. They don’t make any air guns; they just license their name use.

I’d try the light pellets, AA Falcons 7.33 grain or the JSB 7.33’s. I’ve been told that the softer skirts will flare out and bite into the rifling better than harder pellets. They work very well in my P-17. Have fun with your new gun! I used to shoot powder burners a lot, and one of my favorite pistols was a Ruger single six, such a nice solid feel and sound to cock a revolver. Enjoy.
