Pellets do matter

Wow , that makes so much sense. I will definitely be looking for a pellet gauge. Thank you for your helpful observations.
As a previous posting mentioned about a persons expectations. I started in the PCP world expecting to get reliable head shots on squirrels from 30-40 yards.
Well the gun will already do that I suppose, but now my expectations have changed since I’ve seen what is possible with these wonderful tools.
Target shooting at home is awesome and I expect to shoot dimes at 50 yards now 😝

That is not an unreasonable expectation for accuracy, but you will have to put some work in to get there.
Best of luck man, stay after it!

I have a couple Liberties, which are the same barrel as the Avenger as far as I know and they are or at least were known to run tight. One of them I tuned to shoot the 21.14 Barracudas at around 925- 932 fps. The regular Barracudas shoot fine as do the 5.51 and 5.52 "match" but the 5.50s definitely shoot the best. Just my personal experience.

This may help some folks.

One MOA Calculation
How to determine one MOA for any target. Note, MOA = minute of angle.
  • Calculate the distance to the target.
  • Convert this number to inches or centimeters for metric.
  • Double this number, (Diameter of a circle).
  • Use Pi, 3.14159 times the number in step 3, (Circumference of a circle is Pi x D).
  • Divide this number by 21,600, (Note 21,600 = minutes in a circle, 360 degrees x 60 minutes in one degree).
This number is the one MOA in inches, or centimeters if used, for this target at the calculated distance or range. Group shots measured center to center.
Example:
  • 100 yards to target.
  • 100 x 3’ x 12” = 3600” to target.
  • 3600” x 2 = 7200”, (Diameter of 100 yard circle in inches).
  • Pi 3.14159 x 7200” = 22,619.448”, (Circumference of 100 yard circle).
  • 22,619.448”/21,600 = 1.04719”, (One MOA at 100 yards in inches).
This number is usually rounded to 1” for the one MOA at 100 yards.

The one MOA = 1” is an ARC measurement and not a straight line as it is a very small section, 1” of the overall circle circumference at 100 yards.

A trivia note – one MOA on the moon is about 69.5 miles! (238,900 miles to the moon).

So I got some more tins in of the H&N Match 21 gr. I got the 5.51 and the 5.52 , no sorting for head size just from the tin.
I also decided to try the H&N slugs in .217 21 gr. and I’m glad I did. I shoot these strings from the bottom up and all 25 are on the reg. POI seems to shift as the string progresses but always is spot on after a fresh charge. Strange ? I will push it our to 50 yards and continue but I am liking these slugs !

I just started in airgun bought 6 tins of pellets, diff weights in .177, found the Apolo 8.4 gr to shoot great out of my Ben Tr xl mag, tried some Hatsun Gamo, HN but the Apolo shot best, shooting of a bench rear bag, with heavy front rest .23 was my best group, and it was fun and cheap and able to shoot upstairs in the house where it's warm and no conditions, the Apolo was also best in size with a .001 across 20 pellets measured

Last year season I tried over 15 Brand and Weight .22 pellets shooting all of them a same distance of 50 meters - the same ring size - in a gun club - from a Bench - at least two tins of each size.
Collected and marked all the cards, and made a picture from each.
Along the way I was washing-lubing-weight sorting-head sorting, and compared the batches from the card.
And I got sick of this head size sorting, people who use the Pellet Gauge know what I am talking about, I am not going to elaborate me reasons. But I found out that head sorting still "kind of makes a difference" and it is not only a placebo.
And I got myself a pellet seizer, not a push through but the TTRRoBB. I still rework it to my liking, so what I have now is not what you can get for the money.
No Pellet Gauge anymore, I pre-set the head sizer to my liner, and resize ALL pellets to a same size.
And the Canadian winter arrived.... sorry guys I cannot give you any proof of my theory if works or not ....
But at least you got a free read ;)
