Pellets vs slugs.

So looking at the FX impact 357 but from what I can see from my searches it doesn’t shoot slugs well..

Would a pellet in .357 be ok for hunting?

My state allows hunting game up to coyote so far with a chance of deer down the road maybe.

Would an 81 gr pellet be able to kill a large coyote or deer at 50 yards or under humanly? I’ve read about pellets dumping energy pretty efficiently but figured I’d ask the experts

Coyote, yes at that medium and further ranges in the ribs. Deer not so much, unless you are strictly doing close range head shots with a consistent MOA shooting gun. Other's opinions will very, mostly due to the "Bambi Indoctrination", but you can't argue with the ethicacy of immediately putting down game with a well placed head shot. It's an easy 2" inch target. Shooting 81 grain pellets hitting around 800 fps at 50 yards is going to do the job with 115 fpe (figuring a modest 850 fps and 130 fpe at the muzzle). There's no way I would do a body shot on a deer with that set-up, as they will likely die on the next county over and only have one hole for blood tracking.

Big question would be the minimum velocity/energy requirements. Texas requires 800 FPS and or 215 ft/lb energy, minimal 30 caliber. IIRC for game animals. Coyotes are not game animals, and your proposed setup should be fine for them.

Air Guns and Arrow Guns

Alligator, game animals, furbearers, squirrels, and non-migratory game birds (except eastern turkey) may be hunted with air guns and arrow guns provided:

  • alligators, bighorn sheep, javelina, mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn, and turkey (except eastern turkey) may be taken only with pre-charged pneumatic arrow guns, or pre-charged pneumatic air guns.
  • pre-charged pneumatic air guns must fire a projectile of at least .30 caliber in diameter and at least 150 grains in weight with a minimum muzzle velocity of 800 feet per second or any combination of bullet weight and muzzle velocity that produces muzzle energy of at least 215 foot pounds of energy.

That is pretty minimal energy comparing to modern center fire. Contact your state Hunting enforcement office for guidance on what will and won't be allowable. They are all different.

Happy shopping

So I had a Benjamin bulldog. I should have never got rid of it. That gun makes enough power to do a clean pass though of a deer at 50 yards..... Possibly more using the slug. It also shoots pellets well. If you get one buy the barrel stabilizers from pittbull. They make a huge difference. The accuracy is incredible for a big bore bullpup. It can also shoot arrows. It's truly a do everything you need kind of gun. The pellets are small enough to kill squirrel and the arrows shoot fast enough to kill even a moose.

i have dropped deer with a 81gr poly mag head shot and a 81gr neck shot. it can be done.. but my bulldog is modded to shoot pellets at around 1060fps.. get a used bulldog play with them power tune it... lot of great guys out there can set u up

@Cheplicki Who modded yours?

i got my used already power tuned...i think by a guy named rick..lol then added every thing else like longer air tube but my first bulldog was done by pitbull airguns and they did a good job.. sold it miss it and got a new lol

@cheplicki Good to know. Kinda on the fence between Pitbull and Veradium, although it doesn’t seem necessary at this point. My Bulldog throws 81 grain pellets well @ <70 yds. Haven’t tried slugs yet. They seem to have good power out of the box. Thanks.
