Pesters vs Papershooters....

I got into this to shoot. My guns have evolved with my activities.
I am not a paper puncher as a hobby. It serves to keep the guns tuned for pests.
I have a 25 cal pellet shooter that is my main pest gun.
My slug shooter is used on pests but it’s main job is entertainment. I have gotten addicted to shooting pop and beer cans out to what I once considered ridiculous ranges. I broke the 200 yard barrier this past weekend then decided another 50 yards was not going to hurt a thing. 4 shots later and I had my first hot at 250.
I would never attempt a shot at a living critter at any more than about 125 yards. There are too many variables involved in shooting relatively slow and light projectiles for me to attempt it.
aluminum cans can’t be wounded so I really enjoy that.

I punch paper to facilitate my pesting. I do not have the personality to sit at a bench shooting at targets for very long.
I do have to admit to developing a liking of shooting pop and beer cans with my slug gun.
this past weekend I got out to 250 yards. Success was spotty past 150, so no I have not mastered long range shooting. Have to admit it is addicting. I wont shoot any critter past about 80 yards.
Cans are one thing. You can cripple one with no remorse. I just cannot take shots at critters when the odds of a clean kill are sketchy.

Started airgunning just to do some shooting.

But soon enough, I realized that live targets are much more exciting than paper targets:
They move, they hide, they escape, they are evil (pests), they are sometimes edible. 🤣

🔸 I want to say that I shoot paper to improve my shooting on quarry, but that's not entirely true:
I have been bitten by the long range bug, and the fascination of hitting stuff waaaay out there simply by punching in the numbers is steadily growing.
I catch myself looking looking at high-magnification scopes (30x and up), high-powered range finders, high-power slug guns, and other high-damage-to-the-wallet items.... 🤦🏻‍♂️

🔸 And then there is this wonderful pest animal that needs me to shoot it: the hares of Peru that damage the farmers' crops.
To me they are much more exciting than the pigeons I get to shoot in the area where I live....
And the hares are only an 18 hour drive away.... (cf. map). At $5 for a gallon of gas....
Yeah, that would be irrational, and simply stupid. No, I haven't gone there.
Yet.

I’ve been through quite a few hobbies. This is the second time around with guns. First go round was target and service rifle high power. This time around, going on 11 years found me target shooting every single weekend. Eventually I started walking into the woods at my gun club and got into squirrel hunting. Then some how or another got a couple permissions for squirrel and archery for deer. During the summer it’s primarily target but since I mostly squirrel hunt sitting and waiting on them from spot to spot I started taking my hunting chair and Primos Trigger stick to the range and shoot dime size or smaller targets. Sometimes sugar cubes or similar size targets for practice. When I’m done for the day hunting I set up a half dozen or so acorns and confirm that I can hit those every time from various distances.
I enjoy tinkering so my three FX’s allow me to do that.
Hope any of our members in SW Florida and South Carolina are doing the best they can and life gets back to normal ASAP.

Paper only here,
I likely shot over 3,000 birds and assorted animals in my youth (7-15) and looking back (for awhile) almost felt like I was the Clint Eastwood character (Bill Munny) from the movie Unforgiven. I shot all the animals  in the quest of refining my accuracy of my Sheridan, Crosman 760, Crosman 102 and Benjamin 342.
Targets only now .....

Paper punching had its place for me when I first got into this sport. That was all I did the first few months until I got a gun that could hit consistently & accurately at 50 yards. From that point on all I REALLY wanted to do was hunt/pest. I think a lot of it has to do with the adrenaline rush pesting provides me that paper punching does not. I've shot in one competition & though it was fun it didn't "call to me " like hunting does. Hunting has aspects of ethics & desire for humane kills, watching, stalking, that paper punching is devoid of. It's just way more exciting & satisfying for me.

It’s cool how when you’re hunting after a couple hours and start to get a chill and an opportunity presents itself and it just heats you up. Adrenalin is a beautiful thing.
