POI Shift Mystery

Skip, If you don't use a level it doesn't take much cant to impact you pellet at 55 yards. It is important to make sure your rifle is level for each shot. With airguns there is a multitude of issues that cause each pellet not to impact in the same hole or group. I have noticed that at home when I shoot off a benchrest and then swap over to bucket and sticks I have to re-sight my airgun over again. In both positions my pellets just don't impact the same. I'm certain shooting off the bench is much more a stable platform than shooting off a bipod and of course the groups are always tighter, but they also do not impact on the target in the same exact place. Maybe only a inch difference one direction or the other but definitely a noticeable amount. Good luck with your dilemma and hope you get to the bottom of it.

Hey Skip,

A couple of things come to mind.....

first, what compass direction were you shooting at with both locations? What compass direction do you shoot at home? What time of day at any of the three locations? One cause for POI shift is lighting, and the time of day. Sun is in one direction in the morning, a different one at noon, etc. Same with direction at each range; where is the sun in relation to the target? something to keep in mind

Second option is shade/direct sunlight; if one area is shaded and the other in bright sunlight, the way you see the target is different depending on how much your pupils are dilated. also, if the scope is in direct sunlight, it coiuld be heating up on one side and altering the scope alignment. We get a lot of that here is AZ where, due to expansion and contraction, the sun and heat will physically change the scope shape. it is not much, but enough to minutely change POI.

third item is clothing worn. Heavier or lighter clothing being worn, and how you mount the rifle, could shift it just a bit. Wear a tee shirt and hit at one point. Wear a sweat shirt and it is ever so slightly different which can cause a little shift in POI. Been there, done that one and took a while to figure it out.

Eliminate all the variables and you might find your answer.

Hope this helps.
