Power Plenum ~ Taipan Veteran

In addition to lowering reg pressure for the same power, the increased plenum volume increases system efficiency. When I tried a plenum on my .22 Cricket mini, it went from about 55 shots per fill to almost 70 shots per fill with no other changes to the system. Same story with a couple of .25 Crickets.

Hmm. In fooling with my impact, my shot count didn't ever seem to go up or down. If I kept power level the same. Regardless of plenum or pressure. But hard to say what is affecting what when too many variables are changed. 



Only thing I can figure is either more pressure equating to more turbulence? Or maybe the hammer system becoming inefficient in the process of being adjusted to open the valve at higher pressure?

Or is it something else I'm overlooking.... I'm always curious.

Hard to say but I don’t think you can compare the Impact to the guns that have inline reg - plenum - firing valve in a direct flow path connected to each other. I can speculate it has to do with reg performance and not having to fill the plenum as much between shots and a more even pressure through the firing valve with each shot. Both could possibly result in an increase of overall flow efficiency, but that’s just my educated guess...

Interesting. I have my .25 long tuned for King Heavies at 904 ave fps, no add ons other than HST tool, and I am getting a solid 37 shots before I drop off the reg.

What are you filling to? I’m just filling to 250 bar. Also, I can easily squeeze another 4-5 more shots that are still tight but are losing a tad of velocity. These shots would be same POI on paper to 40 yards. When I say 42 regulated shots, I mean exactly that; the pressure in the tube is above the reg’s set point.

On the other end of the spectrum, when first installed the power plenum, I scrubbed off only 8 bar from the 150 bar factory setting. The gun was maxing at 940 fps at 142 bar. Can your gun do that as well? If so, you need to verify your chrony or you may have a Taipan alien  

Regardless, I’m just sharing what I’ve experienced. I don’t really have an ulterior motive here. I am certainly not open for business to tune the public’s PCPs. I’m much too busy for that and it would probably become work/ a killjoy. Good day and latter on guys.

I'd call the factory shroud about the same as a Cricket but a little better. Definitely better in that is has a cap that is threaded on that is easily removed to add a Donny adapter for a mod. If power is left at 48 FPE or lower, the factory shroud does a great job and is enough. With the .22, same situation, the factory shroud is good. The .22 Long can produce 50 FPE and if power is set there it can need some help but for the other versions, the factory shroud is enough.

That's actually a great point. If the reg is operating less, and at a lower pressures, it'll vent less, and with less volume, I think? 



But then again, it seems a regulator would vent a seriously minute amount of air.

Well, I wasn't thinking about the "venting", since it doesn't really "vent" but more uses that path to atmosphere as a reference pressure so that the setpoint remains constant. What I was thinking is that the reg. filling to less of a pressure differential may result in increased efficiency in its operational parameters. Additionally, I think perhaps with the large plenum the pressure "loss" while firing in the plenum will be less due to the approx. 30 to 40% larger volume from a stock gun without the plenum. This could result in a more consistent pressure across the firing valve resulting in a more steady laminar flow and increased efficiency. But it could all also be BS and an entirely different reason. But I do know for a fact that the plenum increases efficiency without changing anything else on the gun, and I'm sure Ernest would back me up on that...

Yup more air on tap in the plenum, either more power at same pressure or can use less pressure for the same power. Up to a certain point of course. Barrel length can be a limit, hammer weight, hammer spring depending on just how much power your trying for.

Haha, good summation either way. True or not. I'll have to take a closer look at some regulator designs.



I can see, though, how position of the plenum being closer or right up on the valve assembly would improve efficiency across it. As opposed to how they are positioned on impacts

Power plenum? Do you contact Ernest directly? I'd like to try that out on my .22 long. I'm getting about 30 shots maxed out right now shooting slugs...sounds like I could really step that count up! And by looks will have to change out the LDC...

Tried contacting Ernest about the failure to increase power but no response. The reason I bought the plenum extension is because of his claim it would give a 30-45 FPS increase with out any increase to regulator pressure. Was trying for more power to test some slugs. That’s strange but I did port the firing-valve a bit too, nothing major though. I was maxing at 940 fps with 33.95 grainers when my reg was at 142 bar. 


Did you adjust your hammer spring and find your max after the plenum install?
