Preferred scopes

I like 3-4x for field of view and usually will dial it up to around 6-8xfor the shot on squirrels in the woods. What I have found is that I don’t care for ffp for the type of hunting I do. Of the scopes that I have used, the reticle is too fine for early morning/late afternoon shots in the woods. And I don’t like the extra weight of an illuminated scope for hunting.

My favorite hunting scope on my 50 fpe PCP with slugs out to 125 meters is my 3-18x50 Meopta Optika6 FFP. It has really good glass for the price point and allows me to easily smack starlings with consistency out to 100 meters. Admittedly, if I were to shoot precisely a lot past 100 meters I would prefer a slightly higher max magnification of 24X or so.

The 6X zoom ratio is truly a wonderful thing. 3X at night or when a squirrel is eye balling me at 20' and 18X for anything past 40 meters...generally I run at about 6X when walking around in the woods...

If I am stationary with a rest, then I use a high mag variable. It affords me the opportunity to dial up the mag for glassing and positive ID.

Walking and stalking I use a 5-25 variable mostly, and limit my range to account for my biological error in unsupported positions.
I have used and really like the 3-12 and 4-16 variables for the woods, but I got a really good deal on 5-25 Aztecs, so there you go.

Shot placement is admittedly easier and probably better with more magnification. But finding the target is more difficult with higher magnifications. The other reason I usually stay around 6X is higher magnification makes my wiggles look worse making me question myself. I can place shots quite well at 6X but if I had to take a 75 yard shot I might turn it up. I can rarely see that far away when hunting.
