Its a real shooter with pellets out of the slug barrel but as of now it hates slugs. Starting to think if I would have put a choked pellet barrel on it would have loved slugs and hated pellets. Some guns are just defiant.

That is frustrating. Makes me think that its not the barrel and probably another issue. I am still new to pcp's but I would think there is a little bit of science that goes into the guns that manufactures make to shoot slugs exclusively. I would think a larger plenum volume and longer hammer dwell time would be more conducive to a heavy slug that has more friction against the barrel. But then again your knowledge of AG's far surpasses mine!

Have you tried the FX Hybrid slugs by any chance? Sorry if I missed that above, just did not see you saying that you did.

For slugs to fly true you need a different twist rate and a lot of power that's why some barrels are designed specifically for them.
Also some barrels are choked which with pellets improves stability and accuracy, slugs barrels are not chocked .... Now that being said, my short barrel, chocked and with a 17:1 twist rate on the Taipan was grouping great with some slugs....go figure!

That's why I put a TJ slug barrel on it. My stock CZ barrel wasn't fond of slugs either, My other gun with the exact same barrel and caliber with only a 25cc plenum shoots slugs just fine between 750-850fps. On a positive note, its winter time here and a good time to help pass the crappy months trying to figure this thing out. When I do, and possibly with the advice from guys on this forum, this might be a valuable topic for others in the future. Doesn't matter what kind of gun. This is the first time I had trouble getting a genuine slug barrel to perform so maybe I am just missing something or got lucky before. I am going to hope that this TJ barrel is just a little tighter than the one I got two years ago and sizing the slugs .249 will help. I know when I tried pushing a slug through it before I cut my leade, it was darn near impossible to push a slug into the rifling with a hex wrench. Had to tap it in with a rod.

I may have an answer for the issue. I too tried the old HW style inserts in the shroud. what I didn't catch for a while was the hair curlers were contracting in length under the high pressure. I didn't catch it until the accuracy got really poor. They were crushed.
I replaced them with thin walled alu. tubing that I cross drilled and wrapped with screen then foam. They held up and accuracy was much better. I think the accordion effect was causing clipping that I didn't expect, and never experienced with pellets at much lower fpe.
the lede will have to be longer, and smooth. It will help. But you probably already did that and polished the bore.

I would never or it would take me a long time to figure out that the pressure from each shot was distorting the sound deadening material. But sometimes things ironically work out. I wanted to be able to load all the hardware into the end of the shroud after cleaning and I also wanted to maintain one inch of clearance between the end of the barrel and the first baffle to make use of the shroud so I pinned the first baffle with a button head. Thanks for the suggestion. I just got lucky on that one I guess.

Tomorrow morning I am going to cut a different crown on my barrel. The first one I cut is a very basic one but not what I put on all my other barrels. The barrel fitting project was such a big one that I got lazy on the crowns complexity. I will also revisit my leade while the barrel is off. Right now I just have it set where there is just a slight resistance right before the bolt is closed when chambering slugs.

Recut crown and switched from .249 and .250 slugs to .254’s. Much better. Gun likes dish base better than cup. Flat base slugs are not good either. Does not like anything under 32gr at current tune. For initial testing I just fire 3 shots unless I feel I pulled one then I fire another one or two. Feeling much more optimistic. Now its time to move from 35yrds to 50. Then 100yrds in the spring. Still have a couple things to do to the gun.

Looking good. I’m going to let you work out all of the kinks and then I’ll think about going down the .22 slug road with mine. I do have everything to go the .25 route also. I guess I’ll decide when you/I get to that point. Thanks for all of the hard work.
