Probably a non-wanted question, but...

Well one thing is for sure, he cannot shoot dime sized groups at 75 yards offhand......I don't care what he say, I would need to see that to take it seriously, for now not ;)
@AirArcher66 😅 I’d be glad inclined to agree. I believe his claim was that he tried shooting from the bench with supports (shooting aids) at around 75 yards once and he easily shot a dime sized group. His question revolves around his conclusion that since he was able to do it so easily on that particular outing that it doesn’t take much skill to do using supports (sandbags, bipods, etc) from the bench. Consequently he doesn’t appear to understand why people make such a big deal over shooting dime sized groups from the bench 50-100 yards. He is obviously enamored with and impressed by offhand shooting in which he has made claims about his abilities shooting in that style as a man in his early 70s. That’s my take. I’m just waiting to read his response(s) to the questions and vitriol his comments have sparked.

Ho yeah I just re-read the post and he did not claim that, I was going by the many angry posts against him,.....seems that many people got very offended.

I'd say more "put off" than offended. And rightfully so.
I don't know, it does not seem that bad to me as many make it sound :

"Question to those that shoot with their guns supported by other than the shooters hands.

Why is it that folks think it's SO...cool, wonderful, amazing, astonishing, etc., that a modern, quality pellet rifle (you name the caliber and gun brand) when said gun shoots dime sized groups at 50 or even 100 yards...when used with sand bags, bipods or tripods to steady the shooter and his/her gun ?

Yeah, I tried it once, to see what the difficulty is. I'm quickly coming up on 72 yrs old, and yeah...EVEN...I can shoot dime sized groups at 75 yards (that's the distance I shot) with my RTI Prophet Compact, in .22 .

So...WHAT's the attraction ? Nothing's been proven, very little skill involved..!?

Sure, I fully understand supporting the gun for sighting in the new sight/scope of your choice. It's much faster than sighting in, supported, than doing it free hand. I'll give you that. I also understand the help in finding possible problems that a gun may have recently exhibited.

I don't get it. Please counsel me on crutched shooting, so I can understand the possible misunderstood .

And...yeah, no...disrespect intended to anyone. Just don't understand this type of shooting. "

If you don't see the sarcasm dripping in his post I don't know what to tell you. It's great to look for the good in people, it doesn't make it good to ignore inflammatory intentions.

@Ezana4CE , it is ok to not believe something, and it is ok not to like my response. There has been PM's going back and forth about this guy and shared sentiment amongst people discussing it. Unfortunately there are many people out there like this.
@CTairgunner1288 I don’t need permission or someone’s ok to like or dislike a post. Also PMs discussing certain members don’t concern me. As far as I’m concerned that’s gossip. I hope the ones talking behind his back can or will address him directly either via PM or in a post. What concerns me is the amount of energy you have personally put into this man’s thread. This is the 97th post in this thread. How many of them are his replies? How many are yours? So what the guy has a post history of snarky remarks. If he’s a curmudgeon then that’s who he is. He certainly wouldn’t be the first. I don’t know him, but I haven’t seen him harming any members. If they tell him to eff off at some point that’s between that person and him. If it gets to the point where a member is that problematic there’s a block feature and it works pretty well.

From my perspective this thread has reached a point where your excessive riding the OP is a bit much. It’s off putting and shows something about yourself. I’ve read and posted thousands of AGN posts and probably more threads and I can’t recall seeing one like this. You’ve said what you’ve said about him and his comments and you’ve reiterated your sentiments, but you continue to do so. Not just that, but it tends to encourage others to jump in and do the same. Ganging up on members in threads is something I personally do not enjoy reading. In lighthearted threads it can be somewhat entertaining at times, but gets old quick. In this thread your commentary comes across as if you are trying to bully the man and for what? This is coming from a member with a long post history who has had his rows with others, but the way we do things matters.

Ahhh ok,....Guess a lot of people get easily offended,

The OP never really mentioned anyone by name and only really voiced his opinion on the fact that bench shooting PCPs makes for an incredible stable platform that results in very tiny groups,...which is true after all and that is why many do just that ;)

Or are defending their position and making counterpoints. Or is anyone that does so "easily offended"? lol You keep making counterpoints to comments by others in this thread. Did their posts offend you?

My apologies for misreading the OP as well. I sincerely *thought* the op claimed to be able to shoot dime sized groups at 75 yards off-hand. Apparently I was wrong and I apologize.

And, to answer the OP's question as to why shoot with rests?

Because to get that accuracy/precision consistently, most people can't do it off-hand. If the target is a living creature, then making clean kills requires that kind of accuracy/precision at ANY distance and most people (myself included) can't get there without a rest/support of some sort. Even if only shooting targets, at ANY distance, most people can't even get MOA accuracy without a rest of some type.

I don't own any sophisticated rests. I use what I have or what is available at the time. However, it is RARE for me to shoot totally off-hand as I know I can't hold the gun steady enough to be accurate/precise... even at close range.

Once again, my apologies for misreading the OP in the first place.

Well. My faith in my thoughts toward @MikeVV are solidified with the lack of his response a week later.
I don't know...

I was one who lambasted him for something he didn't actually say.

In any case, I think MikeVV got his answer as to why people use a rest. (smile)

What else can he say? What else can anyone say? (chuckle)

Have I upset you ? Gotta be cool and give me a thumbs down symbol...isn't that just cute ?
Well, by your own admission, you seem to get your information from papers, books. Reading, whatever. That's all fine, for you.

Me, I lived it, for one month shy of 20 years. No, I don't recall how many satellites that it was that I helped get into space. But I know that I worked in three different acoustic chambers, in two locations within the SoCal area, and one on the East Coast, over and over again, helping with measuring the..."actual sound"...emanating from special speakers within the chambers, and the vibrations (sound !) coming from the as tested, satellite.
One was a smaller room, but tall, one was about 60ft., by 60ft., and tall. The one out of state, is large enough to hold a full movie theater and seats !

These chambers are equipped with many...and various mic's to pick up the sounds. They are set at various levels around the spacecraft. There are a various amount of "large" speakers in various locations within the various chambers. These microphones are NOT the cheap $50 ones that are generally used in testing the sound emanating from air-guns ! The bosses, get really upset when one of the setup guys destroys one !

Hours, behind (not me) a computer, to download all of the data, and then complete the analyzing of said data.

So yeah...take it for what it's worth, I have a "little ACTUAL"... (20 years worth !) knowledge of sound, and how to measure it !!

Mike

P.s. - Funny too. There IS...a guy that currently owns a shop selling air-guns, works on, builds air-guns...that has the SAME thoughts that I do about cheap DB meters, cell phone accuracy ! Call around, you'll find him.
