Tuning Prod tune

What is the highest velocity you have been able to get on a Prod by only adjusting hammer spring and stroke? Can it be increased enough to effectively kill squirrels past 25 yards? I don’t mind fewer usable shots. I would just like to use it for more than shooting close range targets. I would rather not spend money for add-on. Honestly I am very disappointed in the Prod, doesn’t hold a candle to my Maximus at twice the price.

LOL!! I love my P-rod! But I'm not trying to make it do something it was NEVER intended to do in the first place.
I have mine tuned to 615 fps. using 14.3 gr JSB .22 pellets and I get about 32 shots. It has a Huma regulator in it set at 110bar.

I'd drop a squirrel at 25 yards head shots all day! But I wouldn't take a longer shot on a squirrel. Doves and small bird out to 50 yrds. easy!

Check out YT they have some people doing high power with these P-rods. But it's really not what these gun are meant to do.

I would recommend getting a PCP more suited to the task you are looking to do. (Right tool for the job)

lol .. ive taken out medium size rabbits at 40 with a 'stock' tuned prod, but its not something i planned on .. the prod is for close in work under 30 which is where 99% of any home pest control happens anyway ... but yeah, you can get a bigger port, i have one in a drawer i order but never used, and maybe work on the hammer to get it to slap the valve even harder and get it tuned where you can get maybe 5 shots out of it a fill .. then it might be good to 50 .. maybe .. better yet get you some 'swugs' and join the swug brothers so you can go punch paper at 100 lol ..

Isn't the Maximus a rifle? Not a fair comparison.

Use the Prod for what it was intended and you'll find it an Awesome little gun! Light weight, decent shot count, very accurate and put a DonnyFL on it and it's like a mouse farting. :)

ever heard a mouse fart???

I recently picked up a used P-Rod to shoot in my backyard with my 11yr old son. I'm so glad I did, its so much fun to shoot! Mine is doing 640-650 with crossman 14.3gr. Was having so much fun shooting pest birds and targets in the back yard that I took it to the dairy farm to hunt rabbits, it did very well with the polymag shorts and I only hunted under 40 yards with it and it took the rabbits no problem. Very happy with mine.

There are literally pages of info on P-ROD tuning. All very simple and easy for first timers, plus a good learning experience. Google it & get started. Buy a nice allen set (not expensive)

Degas gun by firing, to be safe. Listen for no air.

Bstaley mod with O-rings (ebay, or just buy assorted box at Harbor Freight)

Power adjuster & heavier spring (ebay)

Replace transfer port with plastic tubing (refrigerator ice line) cut it your self w/razor

These simple steps should get you to 800 fps or more at peak velocity & shot count of 20 - 24

Save your original parts & everything is reversable, plus it's fun to work on.

If you have a degassing tool, great, go ahead and use it. All I'm saying is, there are some great posts, pictures and videos out there to use as a refrence. Putting a spring and power adjuster in is not very hard. To "make" a transfer port by cutting some plastic tubing with a razor blade sounds more difficult, but its not. You can measure your "factory" transfer port to size the length of the tubing. Bstaley mod is just adding some o-rings behind the valve, but isn't essential.

If you look at several pictures, videos and read some posts explaining how to do this, and are still uncomfortable then don't do it. I'm just trying to encourage you.

The P-ROD is a great gun to work on, and the basic mods listed above don't require any sophisticated machinery or special skills.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure about the de-gasser. I got my first PCP just last November so this is mostly all new for me even though I have been working on and using firearms for about 60 years. I appreciate your help and encouragement!!! I live on a lake and I would love to hunt squirrels from my Aqua Cycle peddle barge with the PRod. That 800 FPS would fix me up.

My P-ROD is tuned to max out at 925 fps, but with the brass power adapter, I can back it down in just a couple of seconds. Of course I get fewer shots tuned all the way up, but I have several tanks of various sizes and don't care about the shot count of 16-18. As I back it down, the shot count goes up.

We all started with the simplest mods, like adding a LDC (direct fit moderator eBay $38.00) Then moved on to adjusting a trigger pull, or polishing the sear etc. Some guns are sophisticated and complex, making them more difficult to work on. The P-ROD is pretty straigbt forward and not that hard. Search google and YouTube & various other forums (GTA, AGW, CrosmanAirPistolOwnersForum, etc.) You will find so much information on the P-ROD that you will feel like you are an expert even before you start.

If you do the transfer port, spring, and power adjuster you won't even have to take the lower half (trigger group etc) off. Just the top half. That's an advantage.

There is a tiny ball bearing and tiny spring for the safety. If you pull the handles off to adjust the trigger set (in the future) be aware of these. They can pop out and are easy to loose, however you will not mess with that to do the above mods.

Good luck, and get started.!!

I bought a cheap Chinese "speed meter" velocity tester for $24.00. The clamp on model. They can be had for around $30.00 now. Working great after 12 months or so, and I couldn't be happier. Reads in meters/sec, but Google translates it for me into feet/sec, he, he. Not fancy but cheap and very reliable, reads in any ligbting situation. If you can afford better the FX model gets a lot of thumbs up.

You will be using which ever one you buy from now on, and having a lot of fun along the way.

I watched the video with tuning instructions and have read (and re-read) my manual but I am too ignorant to understand exactly what “fill pressure” means? Does higher fill pressure yield lower FPS? It looks like in all the adjustments on the video they always just turned 1 turn of the hammer stroke adjuster. He achieved max FPS at 7 revolutions on spring preload adjuster. I am guessing that decreasing stroke will only decrease FPS even at max spring adjustment?
Thanks for your patience!
