Project Royale 500 .25/.22

Thanks for the kind words Chuck, I hadn't really thought of it but yeah given the opportunity I would love that. I only really know this platform so far though, anyways the barrel showed up and cycles and shoots smoothly with lots of power it seems, unfortunately have to wait a few days till the chrony shows up.

Saw this tip on another thread and yes .25 mags will cycle .22 pellets just fine, so amazing. This is a short barrel, believe it or not it brings the Royale down to 38.5 inches almost like a carbine in this setup.

Tape is hooked onto that silver air stripper thing.

Looks great! I like it much better than the original because the original Royale's look like the barrels are a mile long...this just looks right to me. I would put a 4.5" Huggett moderator on there though if it were me...not just to make it quiet but as air stripper for added accuracy. I like the pictures...I would have fun picking off the dandelion flowers at 50 yards with that .22 for sure!
Your the best, Chuck

Looking good there Nathan, glad it's all coming together as planned. I think it'll look great with the factory moderator on it. It'll probably be really quite and a few inches shorter. Now you can go from room to room without bumping the door facing. Ask me how I know of something like that.. Can you pull the one off of your 500's barrel and put it on this one?
Jimmy

Unfortunately can't put any Huggetts on up here, and the muzzle flip won't work on this barrel either. The barrel doesn't end the same way my Royale barrel ends, I'm not sure what this barrel is off of.

I have a bunch of pellets from my .22 springer days to try out, Yeah Jimmy much shorter it went from 44 inches or so to 38.5, no muzzle flip either adding those last few inches combined with a 20 inch barrel.

Piledrivers 30gr
Jumbo Straton 25.4
Polymags 16
Crow Magnum 18
Ultra-Shock 25.4
Jumbo 18.1
Monster 25.4

Is that a 1/2X20 thread that is on the barrel and would that aluminum piece unscrew from the other piece and if so I wonder what thread that might be? I bet some one could machine an adapter that would fit nice and snug to your barrel with a 1/2X20 on the other end so that you could use your Huggett or the factory shroud. Just thinking out loud..

We get different stuff up here, moderators of any kind are not legal (remember Canada). So I don't have and can't use a Huggett, and as far as I know we never got a shroud on the Royale's just what FX calls a muzzle flip. The Crowns up here are shrouded I think but still differences.

Muzzle flip[/QUOTE]http://www.fxairguns.com/2011/09/muzzle-flip/embed/#?secret=4bgIZ22xz2

Yeah actually I bet the aluminum end cap would unthread and would reveal 1/2x20 thats a good point if I wanted to put a muzzle flip on there, I'm just gonna leave it as is for now, the looks don't bother me. Really looking forward to the chrony getting here see what kind of numbers I get from how it feels it doesn't need much HST at all to get good speed. I have the HST turned all the way down almost flush with the block and try and grease a rat or two tonight it's quite quiet at this speed whatever it is and goes probably 1/2-3/4 into pine which should be plenty for rat head shots.

I'm so chuffed that the gun works shooting .25 and .22 with the same mags!

Chuffed eh? :) I am happy that above all you are having a lot of Fun! It is the whole driving force for spending all this money and time and energy. Every time I shoot my air guns it feels just as thrilling as when I was 8 years old shooting my Crosman BB rifle...and this just never seems to wear off!
Enjoying your post, Chuck

Well first time at the range but unfortunately no chrony yet so no idea how fast they're going. It seems to really like the 18gr JSB's these are some groups at 100m
Not sure how many went through the bigger hole, at least 2. The Crow Magnums shot terribly at 50m again could be a speed thing.

Full mag at 100m these are 3 inch targets.

I shot some of the 25.4gr Monsters but they were spiraling like mad, again not sure yet how fast they're going.

This is actually 30gr Piledrivers and pretty good except the one flyer at 50m.

Chronograph FINALLY came in and able to check velocities, took 3-4 shots with each pellet with the HST almost maxed at 150 Bar reg pressure. The transfer port in the barrel seemed smaller than the second barrel inlet I have for .22, opened it up a bit but there's still room to open it up a bit more.

30gr Piledrivers 812 FPS 44 FPE
25.4 Jumbo 860 FPS 41.72 FPE
18.1 960 FPS 37 FPE

Next time I have the .22 barrel off I might open up the TP a bit more and should be able to get over my 45-50FPE as was my goal.

"Menttaliist"That's using SHP valve and stock hammer weight? Oh and btw are those the .22 monster redesigned or the old ones? Nice job bud! ;)

Thank you sir!

Yes it is all stock just raised the reg and fiddled with the HST, I'm sure that the size of the TP is a restriction currently.

These numbers are with the small TP inlet here that I opened up a little already with barrel attached in pic. The new inlet from FXUSA has quite a bit bigger hole as you can see. I'll open the smaller in the pic a bit tomorrow.
These are both .22

Yeah the redesigned monsters so far not happy yet they corkscrew but this was before chrony maybe ill find a happy speed. But so far it shoots the 18.1 excellent and crow magnums and piledrivers grouping about an inch at 50m shooting good for hunting.

Don't set your expectations for the JSB 25 grain monsters too high. I've done quite some extensive testing with them and they're either spiraling or running on the edge of stability for what I've seen. I've tested them with velocities from 250 m/s up to 280 m/s. It will pop 3 or 4 next to each other and throw the rest of the 10 shots within a 4 to 8 inch group at 100 meters. Most of them already start spiraling before 50 meters and will end up with a very nasty spiralling motion at the 100 meter target. For those who doubt my conclusion, I've tested all with sized, weighed and cleaned pellets, I've also tested lubing them with three different lubes. I've seen the exact same thing happening in an other airgun with a different barrel.

For comparison: JSB 18 grains will do 2 inch groups quite easily at 100 meters straight from the tin and with quite extensive pellet sorting 1 inch groups are fairly easy to shoot.

Yeah that's exactly what I was seeing I couldn't get them to do what I wanted at 50m so I didn't try much at 100m, so strange they have almost an identical shape to .25 King Heavies which the ST typically loves. Well after a bit more testing I was able to break the 45 FPE mark with the Piledrivers but that's all I can get at this reg setting and a 20 inch barrel. With 2.5 turns back on the HST I'm getting 910-920 with the 18s and should be able to get a decent shot count and average 35 FPE with those and the barrel loves them. Able to get just over 38 with HST increased with those but wasted air.

"mcoulter"Wow, thanks for sharing all this information. I was very interested in your JSB 18 chrony numbers. They line up almost exactly with mine after is screwed up the regulator adjustment and essentially make the gun shoot like an unregulated one. Disregard the BAR number above the graph.

Yeah that does overlap basically perfect, I'm amazed how accurate those 18gr pellets are it's been a while since I shot .22. I have some leftover 14.3 hollowpoints from my springer and man does this gun ever bark. I'm used to shooting it at the range with hearing protection, it sounds like a .22 rimfire!

Got out in the woods today a bit didn't see any squirrels but was practicing shooting offhand and had a blast, got 3 sparrows (2 confirmed kills one just a fluff of feathers and managed to get away. All off hand at ranges from 10 to about 25 yards.

Put some masking tape on the stock I use for hiking to protect it a bit and keep it from rubbing on my backpack, so easy to shoulder with this short barrel. This area is a nice place that's within an hour or so from me but the wrong kind of trees for squirrels, spruce, cedar, birch and alder/cottonwood. Ah well still good to get some exercise and mountain air.

Well finally a bit of progress with what was my original intent to get a LW unchoked barrel to hopefully shoot slugs in .22. After paying for in February I had basically forgotten about the blank I ordered, many months later its in my hands all the way from ze fazerland.

German made LW polygon unchoked barrel blank in .22, it'll be a little while till i get it cut but hopefully it will be great.
