Took delivery of my .22 Compact Prophet today. Did a quick barrel cleaning and slapped on a 6X SWFA and put some lead through it. It came set up with the reg on 120 bar and HS flush. It’s shooting 18 JSB’s at 875 with a 2.8 SD and 16’s at 923 with a 3.0 SD. Shot count, at the OEM tune is 58-60 where it falls abruptly off the reg. I really wasn’t shooting for accuracy yet because I wanted to let the reg break in and barrel season and was more concerned with seeing what kind of shot count I would get. I was shooting off a Protektor bag in the front and squeeze bag in the rear. However, accuracy was surprising great. This is 60 shots through the same hole at 50 yards!
My initial observation is the 18s are likely more accurate at least at this tune. The 16’s were pretty squirrels at the higher velocity. I will likely leave the tune alone for a while until I break it in.
The Compact’s barrel measures 15-3/4” long and it’s made by CZ specifically for RTI. A notable change over the full size Prophet LR’s barrel is the port has been elongated and polished on the Compact whereas the LR’s barrel is just a single round hole.
Another subtle change is the rear action appears to be a bit shorter on the Compact. I’ve added a 3-D printed cheek rest to both of my prophets and I noticed it hangs over the rear a tad on the Compact where it’s a precise fit on the full size Prophet. The cheek rest is the single best modification I’ve done to my Prophets. It is MUCH easier to make a repeatable cheek weld with the rest than without it because I never could find a way to get a consistent cheek weld by resting my cheek on the rear action “bevels”.
The trigger came set up a bit heavier than I like but that’s an easy adjustment for another day. Many rave about Taipan triggers but RTI triggers are right there too.
Something that was immediately noticeable, with the very first shot, is the distinct metallic “ping” sound it made when firing. My full size prophet does not make this sound which reminds me of the same sound that a Veteran or Uragan make. Maybe it’s the lack of a plenum on the Compact that causes this sound or perhaps they have changed some of the internals???
I put on a FX / Donny FL moderator and it really hushed the report to near zero.
This rifle is so tiny compared to my other rifles it almost reminds me of a P-Rod. I did not weigh it yet but it’s shed some serious weight over the full size model. I can foresee this rifle quickly becoming one of my favorite hunting rigs in the not so distant future.
I appreciate that RTI has chosen to put the breech seal on the exterior of the pellet probe. It sure makes it MUCH easier to replace the O-ring and also easier to clean the barrel without the risk of damaging an O-ring breech seal inside the barrel.
A great big hearty THANK YOU to RTI for hitting another one out of the park. I have a hunch that you are going to sell a boat load of these rifles!
