So am looking to buy an air rifle and am wondering if the advertised speed is for a light alloy pellet or the standard 7-8 grain pellet? Some companies will specify but it seems like most don't. Actually I'm looking at a 22 having never had one before, just the 177's. So is it standard practice to advertise the speed with an alloy one?

I think you'll find that most mfrs.use the lightest pellet they can find to rate the FPS of their rifles.

Some use the alloy some use a light lead pellet as stated by hawkeye. But others are honest and use a medium weight pellet that shoots well in their gun and state what they are using as well. I would trust the companies that give that information freely far more than those that don't.

What specific rifle are you wanting to know the truth about? Stating specifics and intended use and for what distances may give you much better feedback on whether or not to go for it or to avoid like the plague and run for the hills. You may even get good ammo suggestions too.

From my experience these sort of marketing lies are a lot more common in springers. Pcps tend to be marketed with more realistic numbers usually, although not always the case. Plus pcps tend to be marketed with fpe compared to the fps claims that springers use.

I was looking at the RWS 3400. It shows the 22 version at 800 fps. So wondering if that's for the standard weight? Since I'm not familar with the 22 versions, really don't know what

If you are a power hungry person then the Walther Parrus 22 is 100% German and the RWS 3400 is ASSEMBLED in USA using Chinese and German parts and DOES NOT HAVE THE FAMOUS T-06 TRIGGER and you are getting a Walther type gun that's a hybrid using both German and Chinese parts FYI.
The Walther Parrus is rated at 1300fps in 177 and 1000fps in 22 using the lightest weight pellets. They are around the same price point as the 3400 give or take around $20 or so...I would personally prefer the 100% German Model 34 for the same price with the T-06 trigger or buy the $85.00 Flying Dragon Chinese clone version but that's just me.
Both RWS and Walther come with a lifetime warranty from Umarex USA just as long as they aren't tinkered with.
