I tried foam, cardboard/paper, even a whole comforter in plastic. Next one will he’ll be a stack of old t shirts or cotton fabric.
The only way to make it quieter is if there was a way to remove the cardboard component.cardboard box filled with rubber mulch works excellent.

Honestly. I cant think of anything outside of air that don't to some extent..That still makes a "thump".

At 100y outdoors i can hear the .177 pellet hit a copy paper on a thin cardboard backing .. thin not the thicker coragated .. . Pop can 12 pack cardboard type.. i cant think of anything that's totally noiseless.This - although the paper target will still make noise when hit.
