Tuning R5 Edgun

I have an Edgun R5 Super Long. When I bought the gun it was shooting the JSB 44.75 grn. Pellet at 870 FPS. I decided that I would turn the gun up to shoot the 47.2 grn. Slug. That was my mistake. I could not get a decent group with the slugs so I decided to set the Huma reg. at 110 bar and just shoot pellets around 900fps. Now I have a leak of air that I have never had. I think it is the breech o ring. The o ring looks good but I am getting a puff of air in my eye when I shoot. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know of a tuner for these Edguns? I am frustrated with trying to tune it myself.

Just curious...with the R5 you don't need to remove the breach block to change the regulator...not sure on the R3 series.

Not sure if you removed the breach block as part of what you did...but make sure the bolt holding the breach block in place is snug and not loose...don't over-tighten.

The breach bolt loosened on my R5. Got a pretty good puff in the face. Snugged the bolt. Problem solved.

i think the regulator pressure is to low for a .30cal.... sometimes valves are not able to seal because of the heavy hammer pushing it forward, if .25 edguns regs come from the factory at 135-140 bar, i think the .30 is designed minimum to work with something around 140-150bar....increase the reg pressure and when filling it again, cock the gun and that way you release the hammer pressure on the valve...

Derrick Wall did my Super Long.....zx10wall is his username....He is in Texas and is a hell of a tuner. Only guy who will touch any of my guns again.

Not sure of his availability so shoot him a message....

It was in great shape when I got it but he took it to the next level....FYI I had the HUMA reg in mine and was aiming to shoot only 44 grains pellets at around 880 and when he lowered my HUMA to 110 bar it had the same issue....He said the HUMA regs don't like that low of a set point and would not seat. He installed the Edgun reg set at 110 and works flawlessly....

Thank you for the kind words and referral Dr. Mike. Just for clarity on your R5, I set the Huma at 98 bar and although it got great numbers, I found it had leaked down overnight. The low setting was not enough to compress the belleville washer springs efficiently enough to seal at piston/seat. The Eddy Matador Huma set gives high power and that’s what it’s designed for.

The factory Eddy regs are very good. With your .25 Magnum and desired performance, it just didn’t need the Huma set. The factory reg was perfect for this configuration and the results were achieved.

Steven, I look forward to getting your .30 EDgun sorted.

Hmmm. I must have a "unicorn"...R5 Standard .30 with Huma set to ~125bar. No issues. ~30 shots with a 250bar fill (goes off reg ~27) . ~890fps with 44.75gr Edgun pellets.

How is that a unicorn? I tuned for 855 fps and needed a lower reg setting. Good for you but you don't need that Huma either. Furthermore, the tune for Dr. Mike was on a .25 R5 Super Magnum. It’s a whole different animal.

Did you lube the breech oring? If so, remove it and clean out the cavity and use a new oring. DO NOT lube the cavity or the oring. It will leak if you do so....

Mike

Why would lubing the breech oring cause a leak?

Does this also apply to the R5M?

Because its an unusually big CS o-ring in the new Matadors. The added lube allows that fat o-ring to slide & whaler around letting a puff of air escape. This is the only known gun that does this with a lubed breech o-ring, in my experience. I hope that helps explain it.

Hi Toomuch,

I'll give it a shot.

Did this occur in a shooting session, after a repair (or adjustment), or after the R5M was no used some time?

What is your air source? Are you using dry air or hand pumping?

Can you determine where the air is escaping? Out the muzzle, regulator bleed hole in the reservoir, breach seal?

Is the barrel clear of obstructions? (LIke several pellets :) )

Sorry for the questions but troubleshooting w/o the hardware in front of you can be challenging.

Enjoy,

Nugria

When I pull the trigger on my matador r5m it flutters and or will sputter and bleed out the all my pressure what's causing this

If the rifle is not leaking when you fill it, and what you described only happens when you fire it's most likely a broken valve pin. Only one way to be sure you are going to have to disassemble the valve assembly watch ed's videos it will walk you through it very easy to do if you're mechanically inclined the least little bit.
