R9 tune kit

Man it really wasn’t bad. Doing it vertical with a nut on the table to compress the spring. As long as you don’t let go of the cylinder it can’t go anywhere. The safety did jump out of my hand when I dropped the trigger out, forgot it was going to do that lol. Luckily I’m on open hardwood floors.

Edit: I replied before your whole post posted. That is slick I’ve got a big bar clamp in the shop, I’ll use it when I take it apart again.

If you are going to buy the ARH hornet spring and not a complete tune kit, make sure and have the spring set. ARH will do that for $2-$3 per spring. It is a PITA to do that yourself.

I saw that on their website. No thank you on setting my own spring, I don’t like spring work. I purchased the whole kit. I want it to be easy and have some spares left over. Thanks for the heads up.

Ya, that spring had me on hands and knees once on my unswept shop floor..lol.

Also one of them square keepers would drop out on the table occasionally.

I put the barrel on last after i get the receiver assembled then add stock and done. Dont understand why it needs to go on anytime beforehand on these.

Id guess if your compressor was long enough to comptess off the muzzle , no. But.... It dont hurt to keep the hinge pin/ bolt cleaned ,rust free and fresh clean lube in it. My hw/r9 is a rust collector. Its a constant battle . No gun air or powder i have takes to rust as easy.

P.s...
I forgot once i made a scope rail compressor ( like that expensive air venturi thing..lol). Out of a old one piece scope mount. Now with a side or under lever that does come in handy.. i guess i deleted the pictures of it to show. Nothing fancy just worked and not a $100..lol

Man mine does too, I guess the bluing is thin but don’t really know. Mine set in the corner at dads for ten years so now it has rust specs all over it.

Got it all put back together yesterday. It’s much easier to shoot accurately. It didn’t take as much twang out as I was hoping for, but it seemed to cut the recoil in half. Much quicker shot cycle too, that was the biggest thing I noticed.

I put him back together with just one spacer. It’s running right around 12 fpe. 720 with 10.5 premiers and 850 with 7.9 premiers. I think I’ll end up trying it with every configuration of spacers just to gather more info. The ARH tune kit didn’t come with a new seal which I thought it did, so I’m using the factory piston setup until my eBay seals come in.

Thanks for all the help guys, it’s much appreciated. Anymore knowledge that might come in handy I’m all ears!

Well i still got twang but its nothing like the stock hw spring was with thicker moly ( im using krytox in this latest).

I think it was nicly reduced but not 100% gone. Overall it dont bother me unless its just so bad its annoying somehow..lol

Ya, youd think " kit" means all included..lol.
That’s kind of what I figured, but I went back and checked he seals come separate. Maybe because they have two different sizes for the same gun.

It’s much less annoying than it was, but still kind of annoying. Hell it’s still loud enough that the spring is the only sound I can when firing. I’m gonna play with it some more.

Now that does sound excessive . Hard to tell or say being im not there for hands on woth my own ear opinion.

Its pretty cut and dry install so not like somthing is missing or bad off to cause it .

Heck maybe in a few 100 shots it settles in and quites down some. Fresh and tight may be the factor

Oh.... That old seal maybe got too loose and slamming / not enugh back pressure to dampen the end travel .?

Ill get a picture of one that started to ..

Yeah I’m guessing it’s because I basically just changed the spring. I honestly don’t have a clue though, doesn’t seem like just a seal could reduce the twang that much more.

Edit: could adding more spacers help with the twang? Maybe putting more preload on it would dampen vibration?
Hey Moody,
In one post you said "I bought the ARH tune kit", yet in another you said "I just replaced the spring".

So what are U doing?

The ARH tune kit come with spring guides, spring and top-hat - did U just not install them?
I offered to make u a top-hat, but if u bought the tune kit, u already got one - right?

Kind of confused on what you are buying or installing? Also, you need the other barrel spacer otherwise you'll cause excessive wear ....

Further, a plastic liner inside the piston does help reduce twang, I use them in all my guns .... but I haven't purchased the full ARH tune kit.
Keep in mind, this is a $500 airgun that can last multiple lifetimes, you don't want to "Cowboy it"

This new of the 3 arh seal with like 500 shots you can see the imprint of the transfer port in the face of the seal. Now funny the 2ed arh seal with well over a 1000 shows nothing . All using the same pellets (.177 cphp). Also i thought the fit was right and a little tight as well on it.

now the old loose as a goose and rock hard hw seal that was in it and just maybe 4 months old. It had to be banging hard to bust out the center.
r9 seal.jpg
plus the hw spring was busted in 4 places .. pretty sad for just 4 months old and a hw/r9.. great quality, right?
Anyway plenty of twang on it ..lol

Not like grab a extra seal was suggested ..

No I installed the spring guides too of course. Sorry for the confusion, it’s the entire kit minus two of the spacers. I was really just saying nothing changed with the piston. My velocities are really consistent.

Yes the kit came with a new tophat and it’s installed, I do not need another one. Thank you for the offer.

I’m lost on the barrel spacer? I was able to get both bearing washers back in if that’s what you’re referring to. They are a pain though.

That may be it, the seal is old. To my untrained eyes it looked good. Here’s a picture. Of course this is before I cleaned them up but maybe it will give someone a hint.

I got extra seals, they just haven’t got here yet.

Sorry for the greasy pictures, everything was covered in it. I cleaned everything really well and inspected the piston seal. No cracks or signs of stress anywhere. The seal is hard and feels like a high impact plastic. Also it won’t fall out of the tube, you have to give it a little shake to get the piston to come out so it seems as though it’s making decent contact in the tube, but I don’t know if that’s sufficient to get the gun running at it’s peak. I’ll replace the seal as soon as the new ones come in. I’ll find a plastic piston liner and get it ordered also.

The liner just goes over the spring inside the piston I assume?
