Raccoons are better dead than alive. Especially when they start making nests in your house.

Especially since they found Raccoons near me that tested positive for rabies! I'll give it a week or so to heal up a bit more before going back to my fumigate plan. I think I'm going to splurge on a Hatsan Bully in .357, just so a headshot isn't so necessary for an insta-kill.

Shot placement is key with the Bullboss is .25 call. I put a Polymag right into the heart lung of a big raccoon, and it knocked it down, but it got up and ran off like nothing happened. You must have an well placed head shot in that caliber.

If that was the .357 cal, it would have almost cut it in half.

Assuming the shot are a night under less than ideal lighting, Isn't the location of the heart as hard, or harder to hit than the brain? The heart and brain at near the same size by the heart is deep inside the body so the exact location is difficult to aim at given the fur and fat how the coon is standing whereas at least with the brain you have reference points of the eyes and ears.

A 30 cal Bully is plenty powerful for what you need. Out of the box brand new hatsan has those set up hot, shooting a 44.75 grain Vortex pellet at 1075 FPS. I had to dial mine down 11 turns on the hammer screw to get it at 876 FPS for around 22 shots, or a bit over two magazines. Plus, field supply has those pellets on sale every couple of moths at $10.50/tin of 150. With that price, I don’t mind target shooting all day. I don’t think I’d do the same if I had a .35 or larger, as now I see dollars hitting the pellet trap instead, lol.

What I discovered is that the front of a raccoon’s head is basically armored. About 10 years ago my older ailing neighbor, was having a problem with the raccoon that kept eating all his bird food. It was driving him crazy and he was dying from cancer and he couldn’t cope with it. The raccoon 🦝 was crawling up on his deck and eating all the food out of the birdfeeders that he had mounted on his deck.

I shot him right in between the eyes at about 15 feet, with a full power 25 crow magnum. It bounced off his head. He grumbled a bit crawled back down to the ground and walked away.

I did a little bit of reading, and looked at the anatomy of the raccoons head. What I discovered is that the front of a raccoon’s head is basically impervious. You have to wait till they’re facing sideways and shoot them behind the ear. He came back after a few nights of rest, and I dropped him dead with one shot. End of story. 

Raccoons are extremely smart and extremely nasty. I know you’ve already decided the outcome, it’s the right move.

Hmmm. Maybe I better load up on the H&N Hornets and put the point to the test? They just seem to be a bit too light for these big coons. 

Since I'm somewhat functional (though not recovered) from the broken back, I am having a friend come over tomorrow and place 10 of the fumigation foggers that you drop into water in my crawl space. 5 right above my living room and five in my garage (my house is ranch style) and I'm going to camp out at the entrance and wait to see what comes scurrying out. Whatever it is, I'm killing as many as I can, babies and all!

 While your solution of fumigating and shooting would seem quite satisfying. In your scenario I might consider something else. Raccoons are nocturnal. They’re coming out of your house every night to go eat and do their things that they do. Below is a picture of an absolutely 100% effective raccoon trap. I bought mine at Fleet Farm for about eight dollars. you put some peanut butter inside, Way down by the trigger. They can’t resist. They put their hand down inside the tube and then grab a hold of the trigger and they pull it. They can’t help themselves. Trappers used to use a similar example where they would drill holes in a 4x6 board and drive nails in at Angles and put shiny objects in the holes. The raccoon would refuse to let go of the shiny object. This is even more effective once they put their hand in there and trip the trigger it’s not coming back out. Then you just shoot them in the morning. And they don’t die inside your house. It’s a done deal, and a dead coon

You can shoot them from the front if their heads are tilted down so the pellet hits more perpendicular to the skull. However that is easier said than done since most shots are a night will limited visibility. I would prefer using lung shots however unless you have big power they are probably going to walk off up to 20+ yards and I don't like searching for the body in the dark.

Those traps work well, but too well. I have caught more skunks than coons with dog proofs. Skunks are tricky to dispose of without stinking up the area.
