Rat Bait?

I have gotten permission to hunt rats with airguns on two farms. I would never use bait to kill game but rats are a whole differant story.

So what is the best bait to call rats to the party? I plan to scout the farms out next week to see what I can find.

Bait them with whatever it is they going after at the farms. Once you've located their runways, sprinkle whatever it is they're eating. Set up an over watch position and be ready. At the dairy I pest at I simply put down some of the feed pellets the rats are already going after. Not all rats come out at night, be prepared for some daylight action.

Creamy peanut butter spread over a white paper plate with some chocolate syrup in the middle.

The white paper plate gives great contrast to their dark bodies so you can shoot in low light conditions. I have a red LED light 4' over the above-described bait station. They get accustomed to the light, you have a controlled shoot, and they WILL come.

Toasted sesame oil and bacon fat are very good attractants as well.

A fatty/oily dog food has worked great for as bait whenever I’m trying to trap rats around my house.

Peanut butter or anything they cannot carry off but have to eat it where you put it.

Peanut butter maybe a great bait but don't you have problems with ants eating the bait before the rats?

Seems as though the ants I have around here (small black ants) don’t care for peanut butter…but, the sparrows luv it but I put it out at dark so they only have access to it once daylight arrives when the rats go in.
