Rat hunting setups

So we've recently gotten a rat problem here on the dairy that we haven't really had before. Not talking like dozens of rats running around but will see a few throughout the week. Am planning on starting to shoot them but curious what a good decent setup for them is? I don't want a NV scope or day/night scope. I wouldn't mind a slip on NV setup similar to the Pard 007. Also curious about just using a light like a red light? Anyone have experience with that? I'm not sure I want to spend a whole lot. For sure max of $500. Cheaper the better.

ULTRAFIRE Tactical LED Flashlight Hunting Flashlight A100 Focusable 3 Colors Exchange Glass Lens (Generate RED or Green Light )

Dillon, by far the least expensive set up would be a flashlight mounted via scope rings. This one off of Amazon, has two screw on red and green lenses and the beam is focusable, wide beam to narrow beam. I think I use 1 inch rings and I put 2 large o’rings on the body of the flashlight to make it fit without it scratching. Sorry I couldn’t put a link, there was none. It is $13. The flashlight is light and is about 5-6”. It uses 18650 batteries.

Check out this recent thread about it, discussing among other things the use of a filter vs generation of the right wave lengths:

If you are thinking of the NV007 I would check out Steve Allan's channel on youtube. He goes into it in depth and has a knack for giving very clear explanations.

this one makes the rats say "oh rats"

I use a Crosman Custom Shop 2400KT CO2 carbine. It's a single shot in .22 cal with an 18" barrel, and I used a discount code I found here on AGN to purchase it ($125):

You can put a cheap red flashlight on it from Amazon, along with a cheap red-dot sight from there as well ($30 each item):

Add some Crosman pellets and CO2 cartridges ($25)

With all the over-estimating, you can kill a lot of pests (rats, mice, pigeons, starlings, and sparrows) with this setup for around $200. There are other CO2 powered rifles out there that are accurate and powerful enough to kill small pests inside of 20 yards.

Good luck!

If you want a less expensive slip on night vision. Check this out.

Its $179.00. I’ve been using this around my yard for a little over a year. It works exceptionally well. I’ve shot rats out to 30 yards with it and have take plenty of mice out to 20 yards.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! So gun wise I'm actually all set. I've got an Mrod I'll be using that's tuned down to 15fpe for closer range shots and then should have my EVOL probably by end of next week for further shots. I'm leaning towards a light kit actually now. Specifically one of the Wicked hunting light kits. I need a good high quality head lamp for work here now that fall is here and with winter as I work multiple hours in darkness. Can also do double duty for scanning then a light on the scope as well.
