RAW .177-Can it run with the big dogs?

Thanks for the clarification.

Makes a guy wonder if the big money matches will ever shift to this format of use whatever projectile you feel gives you the best chance to win.

If that does eventually happen I think I'd personally like to see a pellet class at least conserved. And with at least equivalent money in the pot for the pellet class. I think the big comps being pellet only has resulted in some much better BC pellets for long range shooting, and fear that development would cease if pellets went away at big comps.

Another way to make the game interesting is for everyone yo use ammo issued by the MD. I wouldn’t want to be around for the yelling and screaming.

Lol, the placebo effect of using sorted versus unsorted pellets would freak out many of the contestants.

It is interesting how with current rules ammo has to be commercially available, but there's no limits on specialty barrels and other NOT commercially available components.

I've had my RAW HM1000x chassis in .177 cal built by Martin Rutterford at Airguns-USA now for three weeks. I tested it at my local range and shot an EBR target with a score of 214 using Zan 13.4 gr slugs at 1010 fps. This encouraged me to use it at the next match.

Match day, the weather in Sparta was perfect. Light winds and 80 degree temperature. There were 15 seasoned competitors there using Red Pandas, Skouts, FX Mavericks, Impacts, Pantheras and Crowns. I was the only guy with a RAW. Two others showed up to shoot in the .177 class just to see how it went. One man had a Maverick and the other a Delta Wolf. The rest were shooting the usual .22, .25, and .30 rifles. Targets were 100 yard EBR.

We shot two relays and my scores were 182 and 211. The 211 should have been a 220, but I lost count of where I was and missed one bull and put two 9s in the next one. I also shot three relays with my Impact MK2 in .22 but my scores were so-so. I did qualify for the finals and was going to use the Impact, but a friend urged me to use the .177 RAW. I came in third with a 211 which pleased me very much. This was better than any other match I've shot here. I usually shoot Impacts in .22 and .30 cal. We were all humbled, however, by a young lady that won with a Crown .22 cal with a score of 222. Congratulations, Anna.

Bottom line? I think the .177 cal rifles are very capable of competing against larger calibers up to 100 yards. This was an interesting experiment to say the least. Did I say I really like my RAW rifle??
I have the same RAW in 25 cal also built by Martin. I'm not sure I would put a 177 in the 100 meter range as the weights are just not quite enough to print good paper. In 50 meter your 177 will always please you on paper as long as you are having a good day. Find the brand of pellet your gun likes, this will take some patients on your part but it will be worth it.

Well the 177 ghost didn’t do bad or good i wasn’t up to my best shooting today only got 1 standing out of 4 and had 2 paddle hits I think that didn’t go down but shot a 27 out of 40 shot a 13 shot 2” group from styx @100 in practice so not too terrible.i did knock down 2 100 yd targets today

Is it using the stock 17.7 polygonal barrel ?

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by seeing yours and Chuck's 100 yard groups and scores with a .177 RAW.

After shooting 100y bench rest practice EBR and NUAH targets for years with .22 HP ( RAW HM1000x), Safari .25, RAW .30, FX Boss .25 and .30, and an Evol Paradigm .30; I never would have thought about using a .177 for 100y.

I recently bought a Martin built TM1000X .177 and I am delighted with the accuracy so far out to 50y for BR.

Shot my first N50 card with it on a quiet wind day. It's perfect for the 30 and 40y target challenges as well.

FWIW - I do think RAWs can run with the big dogs at 100Y with 'good' pellets. My trial with slugs and my .22 HP did not go well for me with slugs. Martin was not surprised either.
