RAW BM500 Polygonal vs cut rifling barrel

Bhaur,
This is likely Not new information, but:
- I think all Poly barrel made by RAW were Non-choked. They shoot slugs better and allow a higher velocity in pellets.
- I bought a LW regular barrel with a choke in .20 caliber; machined it to fit RAW. At 50 yards it noticeably out performed the polys.
However, the .20 caliber started having issues - something related to what I did - likely a dirty barrel after trying to shoot slugs.

Agreed. In fact Martin was offering a special Cut Rifling barrel made in US.

I wanted to know the comparison between polygonal and that special barrel.

Thanks

I believe they were benchmark barrels (non-choked) and most if not all their barrels are button rifled? Now they offer carbon fiber wrapped barrels as well and seem to have a good following. I would think the quality and internal dimensions would be superior to a LW poly or not but that’s not to say they would be anymore accurate on your gun vs. someone else’s gun?

Today contacted Martin and he confirmed that the barrel of my BM500X .22 is cut rifled barrel.

It's neither LW regular barrel nor Polygonal barrel.

However he refused to disclose the name of manufacturer.

You are very lucky to have a cut rifled barrel of any brand on your gun!, especially with that small a Diameter. It would be very interesting to find what Manufacturer produced them, I’m sure he probably had a batch of several made to his specifications.
If you had the time it would be very interesting to do a comparative test between that barrel and a L.W. Poly in your gun. I would assume the cut rifled barrel is at least 3 times the cost of a L.W.

This is also the case with 30cal barrel back in the day.

I always wonder why Martin doesn’t disclose the manufacture? I wonder if he still sources these barrels?

I’m sure it was a limited number of barrels he had sourced, and it’s my guess that it wasn’t enough of an improvement to justify the additional cost.?
Also this might have been a request by an individual or a team etc. and they helped defray the cost to Martin.

There are fewer Cut rifled barrel manufacturers out there than button pulled, some are Krieger, Brux, Broughton. All three that I have used but only the Brux I had personally cut and chambered for a Kelby Panda and the other two were already installed on other guns I purchased used back in the day! The BRUX was the most accurate and easiest to clean but also was new and had much fewer rounds threw it.

They are from Mark Channlyn. Mark got cancer a few years back and has not gotten back to making barrels. For a while it sounded as if his son was going to take things over, but last I spoke with him that wasn’t happening, either. I had quite a few from him. They were very good.

I had a chance to shoot a 30 cal and still own a 25cal.

Remarkable accuracy. Always thought they liked slower shooting speeds 860-870 fps.
Also didn’t seem to like the heavy longer pellets. Seemed to be designed around standard Diablo, and did so very well.

Martin says that he prepared .22 barrels around 18.13 grain jsb at around 925fps.

He further informed that when at later stage 25 grain redesigned came to market he tuned some guns at around 970fps.

He also advised that many user adjusted the guns themselves at higher side of 900fps and 25 grain redesigned gave them good accuracy.

I was specifically talking about the older barrels, and not the current poly barrels

At one time, RAW offered their 22 cal HM1000 with a Benchmark barrel option. I had one in 2015. I knew a RAW dealer in that time era and told him about it. He would not commit to the barrel being a Benchmark, but winked at me. It shot ok, but not outstanding. I don't think this combination was a huge success. Maybe this was a rimfire barrel and not really suited for airgun use. Let's leave that one in the closet.

Forget this post and see my revised post. I got my info confused.
