RAW REPORT

Update: I found an interesting thread on the topic of barrel indexing here that is pertinent to Airgun barrel indexing. I haven't read the whole thread yet, but have already learned a good deal. I also note that (so far) they didn't mention to lock down the barrel set screws in between making rotational adjustments. You're welcome for gaining from my pain...

Question: I understand tuning for the vertical plane based on the forum topic. Why 12 o'clock vs 6 o'clock? I suspect its for elevation gain with pellet drop. I'm asking because I'm nearly at one extreme of my scope's elevation adjustment and would be closer to the 'middle' if I went with the 6 o'clock position. This scope has FX no limits mounts on it so I can gain more vertical if needed with the mounts.

Sean

I indexed my barrel at 6 o'clock.

It's always better to keep the scope as optically centered as possible. So I use Sportsmatch fully adjustable mounts and keep the scope optically centered.

I use turrets only for fine tuning of my zeroing.

Bored today... so wrapped my air reservoir on the TM-1000 w/ C.F. Wrap, think it’s a pretty good match?

That looks great. I'd like to do the same to my TM with the white tube. If you don't mind sharing, what exactly did you use(never used CF wrap before).

Scott

i don't think you have ever indexed a barrel

if you had you would know there is only 1 in a 1000 barrels that will shoot a single hole while being indexed

the smallest dia i have ever seen was about 3" at 18 yrds but i have only indexed maybe 2 dozen barrels

Dick

Don't shoot the messenger ..... at 20 yards and no wind ... SINGLE HOLE is what you should be getting.

Pellet barrel speed combo is not happy IMO.

Have seen and personally shot similar group sizes with my TM-1000 using JSB 14.43 monsters at 50 yards ! Not a brag, just some reality on what many others know and get on a regular basis.

I believe he was talking about group size on his 5 shot groups not the indexing circle...

My comment was on the actual SHOT group and not the index circle.

As to my TM, when it was set up as a .177 it was also using a MUCH lighter hammer & sprung heavier. The lock time much faster than stock along with the cyclic vibration being far less. Together certainly helps in shooting smaller group sizes when the barrel & pellets play well together. In my case was @ 790-800 fps out of 16" of barrel.

Less barrel length does not have the harmonics and wiggle longer barrels have which also aids in accuracy.

SOOOO many little things .....

Totally agree. When it works, it works, leave it alone. My old TM1000 with the gorgeous walnut deep belly stock, serial number 0031 would easily shoot better than dime sized groups at 50 yards. The group posted below is a ten shot group, JSB 10.3 grain at 900 FPS. If I'd have stopped at 5 shots it would have been well inside 1/4 inch.

Has anyone polished the poly barrel with JB? I'm just wondering how it works on the poly barrel. My reason for considering is it seems to lead up pretty fast. It shoots way better clean.

Crusher

I haven’t tried it yet, but perhaps I meed to clean this barrel since I have jo idea how dirty it is and I have put nearly 400 rounds of my own down the pipe already.

So I think I found out a few things:

1) My barrel was extremely dirty!

2) JSB 10.4 grains seem to shoot better in my barrel: (but still not 'great')

3) Crosman Premiers 10.5 gr rock-even when highly oxidized (from 1998): {unsorted, unweighed, 20 years old, oxidized heavily...}

5 shots, 0.040" CTC!

Followed immediately by 5 shots @ 0.030" CTC!

Needless to say I immediately went and ordered 4 more boxes of CP heavies!

Sean

ya didn’t mean to be negative!, but just thought I’d pass that on, I think the older runs were much better? The original boxes were from 2000, the later from last yr. seriously though my Tm (12 groove ) will not shoot the new ones hopefully you have better luck! (My Poly barrels won’t shoot any of the cp’s regardless!)

Interesting because my polygon barrel doesn't seem to like the 13.4 grain JSB's much at all. Now that I've cleaned the barrel, the 10.4 grains seemed to shoot pretty good. Obviously the CP's shot excellent, as shown above.

I'm wondering about trying different barrels since its now pretty easy to do (with a thimble on my gun)...

Not a fan of thimbles on "Single shot" Target guns .... With the freebore ( loose leade ) a thimble has you loose the feel of how a pellet fits the bore when loading.

And the case of RAW you loose 1/3 of the barrels rigidity within the receiver too.

I simply will fit a barrel to receiver and using a dial indicator spin barrel within receiver finding where the run out clocks at 12:00, mark the spot and finish the transfer port and grub screw flats etc ... Done with the full rigidity of receiver front to back.
