Reality vs YouTube gun performance for the new guys

Sorting pellets for weight can also reduce the ES but I do not do it. Doesn't seem to affect accuracy.

I do think I see lower ES for pellets my gun likes. Most of the time, anyway. My P35-177 shot copper plated Baracudas pretty well despite an ES significantly higher than other pellets it shoots well. But my other guns get a lower ES on their most accurate pellet. I consider it another indication that a pellet works well in that gun.

Non-regulated airguns naturally have a rise and fall of velocity over a specified pressure range. The extreme spread of a non-regulated airgun over a specified number of shots is a valid measure of usable number of shots. The purpose of a properly functioning regulator is to give a consistent plenum pressure, with a shot string that is unaffected by the falling pressure in the main tank. In that case, the standard deviation is a much more useful number than the extreme spread.

An extreme spread that is quoted without also giving the number of shots is almost meaningless to me.

A regulated airgun does not really have an extreme spread in the normal sense. A regulated airgun has a standard deviation. The standard deviation can tell you the probability of achieving a particular extreme spread over a specified number of shots.

For an unregulated airgun, I want to know the extreme spread over a given number of shots. For a regulated gun, I want to know the standard deviation.
