Tuning Recoil Pads, Not Just For Recoil.

I recently got an RWS 34. It comes with a plastic but plate. Well when I cock the gun. I either put the butt stock between my legs resting on my stool or I put the butt of the gun on my thigh. With the plastic but plate. The gun would slip around making it difficult to hold when cocking. So, I purchased a rubber recoil pad. This will give the butt some grip.

Here I’ve laid out the center line and I am able to use the top existing hole. So I’ll only need to drill the bottom hole.

Here you can see how oversized the new pad is. The tape is just a security blanket. It really does not provide much protection. But if / when you sand the tape. You’d better change your angle. 

I’m using a drum sander. The trick is to look at the stock. Not the recoil pad. Keeping the stock parallel with the sander face.

I had a slip on recoil pad on it just to give me a little more LOP.

The LOP is fine for me. And I was able to get a recoil pad the same thickness.

Good job! I have done a few and it is hard to get it just right. Rubber butt pad makes it easier to stand your gun in a corner too. They should be standard on all guns IMO.

When I was in business, I would mount then scribe the new butt pad. Your eye can get extremely close to a scribed line, and no worry about scarfing someones nice walnut stock!! Being a toolmaker making precision tools I had an eye for working to a scribed line. Thank goodness for that, or I might have had to do some stock refinishing....

I hate slick plastic butt plates on any kind of gun. If for nothing else, you can't stand them in the corner on a smooth floor!

The Limb Saver pads are awesome for an added 1" LOP. Super flexible. Just note basic butt shape and pick the right sized one. I tried other brands. What a waste.

Here is my Miesterchutz after Chris "r1 lover" installed a classic white line pachmayr. Chris has been doing replacment butt pads along time and knows his stuff.

Thanks Duckfish! I don't have as steady a hand or nerves of steel that survivor45 has to grind a pad in situ so I drill new screw holes in the butt to match those in the pad, attach the pad, scribe a line on the back of the pad that follows the contour of the stock, remove the pad and grind it on a bench sander. One trick I learned the hard way is to drill a single hole in the stock first, attach the pad with a screw in that hole, then use the second hole in the pad as a guide to drill the second hole in the butt. That assures the butt doesn't move after drilling the first hole and both holes drilled in the butt perfectly match the holes in the pad.
