Recommend a PCP on a budget.

Hi all, I've been a hunter for a long time but always with regular firearms. I've been hiding out in the off topic section while lurking the general airgun pages. I think I would like to try to get in some small game hunting this winter with an AG and this state allows it.

I think I want a PCP gun because they seem to be more accurate and powerful but I can't afford a compressor so I will have to use a pump.

So my questions are, what is a suitable less expensive PCP that is accurate enough to hunt squirrels and rabbits and maybe a ground hog from time to time? How hard are they to pump up and how many shots can you expect with an average gun?

...well, I am in your shoes, and I bought a Benjamin Cayden...I got 25% off at the Crossman site @ $450...

...it is heavy but that is the only valid complaint I have...except maybe that the wood on mine  don't look much like in the the picture... (grin)

...it is accurate, powerful, smooth, and quiet....it is not hard for my little old man body to charge up with a Hill pump...I use that one because it filters moister out of the it intakes...

...there is no loud ping or slap, as is the case with many air guns, so when you screw an Donny FL LDC or some such onto the threaded barrel it is not undermined by a loud action noise...

...it also looks and feel like a real gun...a nice one at that...

Artemis pp700 is cheap, regulated, powerful and accurate and you can change caliber (.177, .22 and some are adding .25), can long barrels. Externally adjustable regulator, easy to adjust hammer spring. Easy to fill with a hand pump. Around $225. High shot count 


I have had a great time with the TalonP and that was sub $500. This has a small bottle and the get 12 shots at higher power, 45-50 fpe, and maybe 30 shots at lower power around 35-40 fpe. Simple and unregulated easy to completely break down and rebuild. Many modifications easily possible.

Avenger is made by Nova Vista out of Macau China, so is the Umarex Origin, Avenger too hard / pressure high to pump...Would stick with BSA/ GAMO, Some of the Hatsan's may fit your bill, however the URBAN / BUCCANEER use the same internals and are BSA hammer forged Barrels, accurate...

Yeah, China... that's a deal breaker for me. Too bad but those GAMO and BSA guns are made in the EU, right?

for a truly budget pcp if you don t mind a single shot this is one of the best deals going in my opinion 

it is not fx or brocock quality but it is a great deal for an entry level pcp setup comes with a very usable scope and rings and has a threaded barell so adding a muzzle device is a snap its a great bang for the buck pcp and its my go to hunting rig

if you must have a repeater the gamo urban id hard to beat i have one and its a great shooter but will require a scope and doesnt have the ability to remove the factory silencer which does a descent job but no option for anything quieter 

the maximus is accurate lightweight and easy to carry in the field and very quiet after u add an ldc its also easy to fill with hand pump

I will second the Gamo Urban. 40 pump strokes will get you to 230 bar. 

Benefits (check out the Pyramydair user reviews, I did so before getting mine):

- made in UK, the BSA barrels are renowned for their accuracy. Cold-hammered. Not pellet fussy, they love the low-cost Crossman premier Domed, the Gamo Hunter etc.

- well silenced

- short, with a very well balanced pistol grip stock. Reasonably Light + easy to carry. The stock is synthetic, no worries on a rainy hunting day. It is solid & well made, similar in quality to much higher priced guns.

- great BSA magazines, easy to use.

- excellent 2-stage trigger. The out of the box setting is lawyer proof, but you can make it sweet with little effort.

- very low price, thanks to Gamo's economies of scale. They are based in Spain . One of the largest airgun manufacturers in the world. They also own the tradition-rich BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) in the UK.

I also recommend to look into the Turkish-built Kral Puncher with the synthetic stock. Try to find the 48 or 53 cm barrel, either in .22 or .25. The next one up, the Mega version with its 58 cm barrel, is a bit heavier. Less practical for dragging thru the forest all day!

Here is a picture of my .25 Kral Puncher synthetic. It has side lever cocking, the Gamo Urban has a bolt action.

Incorrect the Avenger is made by Nova Vista in Macau, China, Air Venturi is the importer, it is know as the Leviathon in South America, the same group makes the Umarex Origin and the American Tactical, Nova Liberty, Freedom and the Seneca Aspen. They make most of their guns and white label them for the importer...Much the Same as Spa/ Artemis/ Diana.
